Feb-15-05  BlazingArrow56: 21. Be7! Shunning the recapture at b3 and starting a very nice combo. Playing accurate to the end 27.Rd1 is curtains thanks to 27. ...Re7 28.Qb8#

Whitehat1963: What a phenomenal puzzle this would make after 19...cxb2. Go ahead, give it a try. I think this is definitely weekend material.
Sep-27-07  BlackNightmare: holly mother of god he doesnt just like initiatives he's married to them, odd he didntot mke it to be one of the greatest or a WC challenger reminds me a lot of Tal

centercounter: Unfortunately, according to Dvoretsky's book, Viktor was lacking in endgame proficiency. Many of the top players keyed in on this and sought and forced quick exchanges.
May-26-08  WarrenHam: Eine Bestrafung fuer den Oestreicher!
Aug-19-12  dick50: Uncastled Black King is cramped by own Pieces. Available two squares are controlled by White Bishop and Knight. DSB on f8 is supported by King alone and nobody else can help him. Stage is set for Queen to enter and hence Qh8 is the most promising move. Other alternative initiatives like Bxe6 or Nxd6 appear inadequate.

20 Bxe6 fxe6 gives more room to King and R on d7. There is no further attack.

For 20 Nxd6 Rxd6 Queen has to first move aside so that R on d1 can continue the attack. With R vacating d7 Black Knight can now return there to defend Bishop on f8.

20 Qh8 Pins helpless bishop. Nd6 is now possible if one of the defender is diverted. 21 Be7 is the stunning move that achieves it. 22 Nxd6 opens d file for decisive attack by white Rooks.

While all this is happening, White King feels safe in the shelter of enemy pawn on b2

al wazir: Well, I got the first move. But after 20...Nb7, the win isn't clear to me. 21. Be7 doesn't work: 21...Rxe7 22. Nxe7 Kxe7.

If 21. Ba4, then 21...Qc5 22. Ne7 Rg4. Now what?

Aug-19-12  rilkefan: <al wazir>, 21.Ba4 and it's back on.

I looked at Qh8 as my first candidate, but didn't see Be7. I then tried various sacs on e6 with no luck.

Rybka freeware found 21 Bf6!, below, with the threat of 22 Ng7+.

It looks like black has to exchange his rook for white's bishop to prevent 22 Ng7+. Then black will lose his b pawn and be down an exchange.

Never would have seen this line unaided.

M.Hassan: "Insane" White to play 20.?
White is a pawn down.
pinning the Bishop!!

20.Qh8 Nxb3
21.Be7! threatening mate and Bishop can only be taken by the Rook:

21.........Rxe7
22.Nxd6+
<If King moves to d file, like 22...Kd8 23.Nc4+ and Black Queen falls>

22...........Qxd6
23.Rxd6
And black has to continue a Queenless game
1-0 very likely

HeMateMe: I did look at the first Queen move, but didn't see any mating net.
Aug-19-12  dumbgai: I wasted a lot of time trying to get a knight on g7 to mate after Qh8. Anyone else get stuck on that path?

chessex1: Kupreichik is currently playing in the European Seniors. He is still awesome!
Aug-19-12  Yogi Darwin: Like others here, I saw Qh8 immediately but failed to find an effective continuance. Be7 is something I never even considered. Excellent puzzle.

Aug-19-12  bachbeet: I saw Qh8 as others did and also failed to see the real beauty of it.
Aug-19-12  I Love You: Only Qh8 I saw but the continuation move - Be7! never came in my mind. I only think the lines, taking d6 or e6 which is wrong.

Boomie: Insane indeed. And one of the prettiest combos this side of the Evergreen Game...whatever that means.

At his best, Kupreichik was a top player. Spotty performances kept him from breaking into the top 10. Sochi 1970 was one of his best tourneys - http://www.chessmetrics.com/cm/CM2/...

  sevenseaman: Candidates.

a) 1. Rxe6+? 2 extra defenders in f7 and Rg6 before Black will think of moving the N from in front of his Q. Too slow/no good.

B) 1. Qh8. The side effect of this move is that it frees up the Black N.

Its not easy to decide what is Black's best move here. Should he now play Nxb3 I have a pretty plan, viz;

20. Qh8 Nxb3 21. Be7 Rxe7only move (white was threatening Qf8#) 22. Nxd6+ Qxd6only move 23. Rxd6 Na5 24. Rd8+ Kxd8only move 25. Qxf8+ Re8 (Kd7 is worse) 26. Qd6+ Bd7only move 27. Rd1 1-0

But this is Kupreichikian Utopia. Why would Black play <20...Nxb3>. This is not his best move. His much better move is <20...d5>. (Danner's Spanner)

Its a spanner in the works and the foregoing combination does not work. I have tried other combinations, even roping in Crafty. A White win has eluded me so far.

Sample this;

20. Qh8 d5 21. Rxd5 Rxd5 22. Be7 Nxb3 23. axb3 Rxf5 24. Qxf8 Kd7 25. Rd1+ Rd5 Rxd5+ exd5 and White's chances have evaporated.

I should like to know how White wins against best defense.

Aug-19-12  TomOhio: 21.Be7 was obviously inspired by the devil. There's no way I would have seen that OTB.
