Kibitzer's Corner
May-08-03   Rookpawn: More than half the game was consumed in the Rook + Bishop vs. Rook endgame. (The 50-move rule clearly didn't apply. I think that the superior side recieved extra moves in special endgames.)
Aug-04-07   alexandrovm: this board is not as prettier as the other boards, the reason?
Jan-17-09   WhiteRook48: there's been other endgames like this... some of them were even longer than that.
Feb-07-09   WhiteRook48: wow, this endgame is much more common than I thought
May-12-09   WhiteRook48: Grouch!

Phony Benoni: There was a period in the last quarter of the twentieth century when computers first discovered that certain endgames could be won, but not within the 50 move limit (without exchanges or pawn moves). For these endings (R+B vs. R being among them), the limit was extended first to 75, then to 100 moves.

The result was a plethora of extremely long games which were even more boring than usual. Specators began to long for grandmaster draws.

The extension has been rescinded.
