Jun-18-03  actual: Is this a type of ending when a knight is stronger than a bishop or did Maroczy just play it incorrectly? Does the K+P ending after move 42 look lost for white?

Honza Cervenka: 49.a4 seems to be a blunder. Maybe I am missing something, but after 49.Ke4! Kxb5 50.Kd4 I see no problem for white. For example 50...Ka4 51.Kxc4 b5+ 52.Kc5 etc.
Jun-19-03  drukenknight: When is an attack not an attack? I attempt to incorporate Honza's move into my own theory. Okay Honza appears to have saved Maroczy w/ a very nice: 49 Ke4!

In my theory I would look at this position and see that white is behind in material because black has the only passed pawn therefore white has to attack.

HOw can white attack when all he has is a K and his pawns can't make a check?

By forcing the Kings into opposition? Is that a way to attack the King when you can't make a check?

I dunno, it works for me.

Mar-05-08  wanabe2000: At first glance I think 41. b4 is losing because it forces the exchange of the bishop for knight. The weaking of the c pawn leads to a lost ending.
