Phony Benoni: Drama at Lake Hopatcong! When this game was played in the last round. Marshall was leading the field with 10 points, just ahead of Abraham Kupchik with 9 and David Janowski with 9. Hodges, the oldest player in the field at 62, had faded badly after starting with two wins, scoring only three draws in his next ten games.

Marshall played aggressively as usual, and by move 20 was a pawn ahead; however, his doubled and isolated c-pawns meant that the win would not be easy. He gave it a shot, even ceding the extra pawn back, but couldn't make progress against the veteran. Eventually, he had to agree to a draw as Kupchik won his sixth game in a row to tie for first.
