Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-23-07  Karpova: Kmoch calls 8...0-0 a spirited pawn sacrifice with the only drawback that white didn't have to accept it.

But he overlooks that the first line he gives doesn't work: 9.cxd5 cxd5 10.Nxd5 Nxd5 11.Bxd5 Bb4+ 12.Kf1 Ba6+ [sic] 13.Kg1 c6 (<nice idea as the Bd5 is pinned to the queen>) 14.Bb3 Qe7 with a strong attack.

But white moves the e-pawn for the first time on move 31 and so 12.Ba6 is not a check. After 12.Be3 white has a clear pawn plus. 9.cxd5 cxd5 10.Nxd5 Bb7 11.Nxf6+ Qxf6 (<attacking f2>) 12.0-0 Bxg2 13.Kxg2 gives black an active position so it's understandable that Rubinsdtein went for the less risky way to gain an advantage.

21.Re7 Rxd5 22.Rxf7 Rxd1+ 23.Kg2 Rxf7
