Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-30-03  xu fei: Was 30.Bxh5 not possible? I don't see how black would refute this.
Jul-31-03  Dirk: I think 30. Bxh5, 30...e4! is very dangerous for white as the Queen is cut off from the kingside and the diagonal is opened for black.
Jul-31-03  xu fei: 30.Bxh5 e4 31.Rf1 Rg7 [32.Rxf5 Bh2+ 33.Kg1 Qg3 34.Qxe5 Qxh3 ] [32.b6 Qxb6 33.Qe8+ Kh7 34.Rxf5 ] 32.Qd1 f4

Is there anything wrong with the continuation 30.Bxh5 e4 31.Rf1 Rg7 32.b6 Qxb6 33.Qe8+ Kh7 34.Rxf5? Can anyone suggest improvements?

Jul-31-03  Cyphelium: xu fei> Is there anything wrong with the continuation 30.Bxh5 e4 31.Rf1 Rg7 32.b6 Qxb6 33.Qe8+ Kh7 34.Rxf5?

Your variation certainly looks dangerous to black in view of the threat 35. Bg6+ followed by 36. Rh5+. 34.- Bg3 35.Bg6+ Qxg6 36. Rh5+ .

So maybe black should play 32.- Qd7!? instead. (After 30.Bxh5 e4 31.Rf1 Rg7 32.b6.)

Then it's a complete mess. An amusing variation I came up with is 33. b7 Qxa4 34. bxa8Q Qd4+ 35. Rf2 (35. Kh1 Qxd2 )

35.- e3 36. Bxe3 Qxe3 37. Rb1
(37. Rc2 Qe1+ , 37. Rf1 Qxh3 )

37.- Kh7! 38. Rxb8 Qe1+ 39. Rf1 Rxg2+ 40. Kxg2 Qg3+ 41. Kh1 Qh2 mate.

Perhaps white should try the endgame after 32. -Qd7 33. Qxd7 instead. 33.- Nxd7 34. bxa7 Rxa7 35. Rxf5 Rxa2 and maybe black is ok, in spite of being a pawn down. What do you think?

gawain: After the suggested 30. Bxh5, 30...e4 comes 31. Bg6! which seems to win easily. What do you think?

Certainly Mikenas has squandered much of his advantage in the actual continuation by the time we reach 36 Rf2. But in my opinion 30 Qh4 was not the culprit. There are many good continuations. After 30 Qh4 Rg7, 31 Qf6! would have won easily. E.g. 31... f4 32 Qe6+ Kh8 (not 32... Rf7 33 Bxh5, and obviously not 32... Qf7 33 Qxd6) 33 Qe8+ Rg8 34 Qxh5+ Qh7 and the exchange of queens leaves B a pawn down in a dreadful position.

  gawain: In the line 30 Qh4 Rg7 31 Qf6 f4 32 Qe6+ Kh8 33 Qe8+ there is a pretty nifty king hunt after 33... Kh7? It goes: 34 Bd3+ Kh6? 35 Qe6+ Kg5 36 Qf5+ Kh4 37 Be1+ Rg3 38 Qf6 checkmate.

[Not quite forced because B can play 34... Rg3 which loses anyway.]

I think you are right, since 31.- Bh2+ 32. Kh1 Rg7 33. Bxf5 Rxg2 34. Qxe4 doesn't work.
