  Phony Benoni: Perhaps he thought that if he got his king to the 8th rank, he could promote it to a queen.

More likely, this was just a terrible time scramble. Quite often, if the last move is by the loser and around move 40, it suggests a loss on time.

Sep-17-10  Jim Bartle: I once saw an ad in a magazine for a "65th square," a little square that you could attach to the side of the board in an emergency.
