Kibitzer's Corner
May-02-03  Rookpawn: With this draw, Smyslov ensured first place in the Zurich Candidates tournament, whatever the results of any games in the final two rounds.
Aug-01-06  aw1988: I don't see people complaining about this draw.

suenteus po 147: <aw1988> I was going to unleash biting sarcasm in response, but you are not deserving of such venom. Suffice it to say, if we were witnessing this tournament today there would be plenty of outrage. It's a shame since chess should be celebrated.
Aug-01-06  aw1988: I posted what I believed to be an innocent comment on one Kramnik draw and it was obviously taken the wrong way, (although that one was for good reason, I was incorrect blatantly on that one)

My point was merely to bring to the forefront the realities of the short draw. It happens, and I just can't believe the criticism it gets. It's just a normal event.

Aug-01-06  aw1988: Anyway, I'll shut up about this on unrelated pages because it's due to start something nasty.
Aug-01-06  aw1988: As a matter of fact, I probably shouldn't have said anything.

keypusher: This was Smylov's 27th game of the tournament, toward the end of a double-round robin with 15 players, including most of the best in the world. Tournaments like Zurich 1953 don't exist anymore. If anyone is ever justified in taking a short draw, Smyslov was here.

suenteus po 147: <aw1988> For the record, the biting sarcasm wouldn't have been for you, but since you most likely would have checked the response, I didn't want you to be reading it thinking it was meant for you. Hmmm.... Maybe I shouldn't have posted anything either :)
