Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-31-04  samvega: great game by Kholmov. Could white have tried 22.Nxb5?

Eg 22.Nxb5 cxb5 23.Qxb5+ Kf8 24.Bxa7

or 23..Qd7 24.Qd5 Qc8 25.Rc2

What would be the followup against 22. Nxb5 cxb5 23. Qxb5+ Qd7 24. Qd5 Rc8, e.g. 25. Qb3 Kf8 26. Rc2 Kg7 and Black consolidates.

Of course, White must strike back in the center and queenside at some time, because the passive play in the game proved disastrous.

But there may be other ways to do so. For example, 25. a4. If then 25...Bb6 26. Qe2 a6, White has 27. axb5 axb5 28. Nxb5 Kd7 29. Nc4 Rgb8 30. Nc3 Bd4 31. b5 with a lot more activity than in the game. Or 25. a4 a6 26. Ra1 Kd7 27. Ra3 Bg5 28. Qe2 h4 29. b3 and White has some possible queenside counterplay. Or 25. a4 bxa4 26. b5 c5 27. Ra1 and Black's position looks a bit exposed.

Jan-01-05  samvega: Thx for the response. The idea behind 22.Nxb5 was to avoid the exchange of the dark square bishop, and possibly win a third pawn for the piece. So I was thinking the follow up to 25..Rc8 would be 26.Bc5. Does that work?

As for your suggestions, I think I'll have to copy them down and play them out on my board at home.

After 22. Nxb5 cxb5 23. Qxb5+ Qd7 24. Qd5 Rc8 26. Bc5, Black could play 26...Qc7. Wouldn't this just force White's bishop to return?
