al wazir: A good pun for once. But a poor game. Black spurned the draw.
Oct-11-10  MaxxLange: was this a correspondence game? or Estrin playing some serious homework at the board?
Oct-11-10  kungfufighter888: Black has the chance of drawing by perpetual checks.
Oct-11-10  paavoh: @MaxxLange: The site says Lublin 1978, so it looks like OTB tournament if the annotation is coorect. CC games are not linked to locations, but to events rather, and seldom over in one year.
Oct-11-10  SafeNorSound: 24.Qxf5! threatens both 25.Ng6# or an overwhelming attack on the h file. If Nun declines the queen sac, there doesn't seem to be any counter-play.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Second consecutive day with a masterpiece of a pun. The game itself is very interesting, however flawed; the 7.h4 attack in the Pirc Austrian isn't supposed to be sound, but Black has to know a ton of theory, so perhaps it's worth a roll of the dice every once in a while.
Oct-11-10  AGOJ: Well, the game was played in 1978, Nunn was 22 or 23, just then a grandmaster. I think Estrin agreed with An Englishman, and rolled the dice.

jepflast: Best pun I've seen in a while!
Oct-11-10  Sem: Yes, brilliant pun.

scormus: Sporting play by Nunn who must have thought a win was possible, although the WK would surely be safe for long enough on d1. So was it one of those situations where 1/2 is not enough? Whatever, a really entertaining game, matched only by the pun.

My choice for PONY

kevin86: After 39 ...Kh7 40 Qd3+ exchanges the queen perforce and the rook vs bishop advantage wins for white.
Oct-11-10  toso51: 33...Rxd5??
Oct-11-10  Flatfish: I have a confession to make. I am the author of this pun. (Surprised how quickly it appeared as GOTD, too!)
Oct-11-10  howlwolf: Nice job, Flatfish!
Oct-11-10  Keith Dow: Dear SafeNorSound:

"24.Qxf5! threatens both 25.Ng6# or an overwhelming attack on the h file. If Nun declines the queen sac, there doesn't seem to be any counter-play."

24. Qxf5 Bh6+
25. Rxh6 Nxf5 0-1

Oct-11-10  apiana: why not 26, bxb2+, with good winning chances for black???

David2009: This is the most amazing GOTD and the position after 26 Qxh5!? is a future Insane puzzle (Black to play and win!)

The winning line (courtesy Crafty End Game Trainer) is 26... Qxb2+ 27.Kd1 Qb1+! 28.Kd2 Rf2+! 29.Ke3 Qb6+! 30.Kd3 Qd6+ 31.Bd5 Qg3+ 32.Bf3 (a sad necessity) h6! 33.Qd5 Qg6+ 34.Re4 Rf8! 35.Re1 Qa6+ 36.Rc4 Qa3+ 37.c3 Qxa2 38.Re2 R8xf3+ 39.Qxf3 Rxf3+ 40.gxf3 Qa5 41.Ree4 h5 and Black will win on material. White's moves are as suggested by Crafty EGT colours reversed: alternatives seem to lose more quickly.

Instead 26 Rxh5 leads to an interesting draw: 26... Qxb2+ 27.Kd1 Rad8+ 28.Bd5 Qd4+ 29.Kc1 Qa1+ 30.Kd2 Qd4+ (Black has perpetual check but can try for more) 31.Kc1 Bh6+ 32.Rxh6 Qe3+ 33.Kb2 Qxh6 34.Rxh6 Rxf5

nd now 35.Rxh7+! gives White the last laugh - the passed P gives enough counter-play for the draw.

Crafty EGT links to explore the variations:

Estrin vs Nunn 1978, 25? (a move earlier than the first diagram: you start Qxf5 , Crafty will reply Nh5 and you can then choose between Rxh5 and Qxh5): http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t... This link gives you the chance to defend as White with each of the tries Qxh5 and Rxh5.

Estrin vs Nunn 1978, 25...? colours reversed
http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t...

Estrin vs Nunn 1978, 26...? colours reversed
http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t... Crafty EGT always plays Black, so to play the Black side you need to play colours-reversed.

<apiana: why not 26...Bxb2+, with good winning chances for black???> Very risky: e.g. 27 Kd1 Rad8+ 28 Bd3 Rd7 29 Qe2 threatening Rxh7+
