patzer2: <yeats1939> After 35. Qb8!? Qxf2! 36. Qg3 Qxg3+ 37. Kxg3 Rxa2 White has "won the exchange," but Black is no longer losing and actually has the advantage with his three extra pawns.

After 36. Rdd8 Bxd8 37. Rxd8 Rxf2 Black has turned the tables and is winning.

P.S. Please don't be overly concerned if you missed the pattern. It's just a matter of practice. After solving a few deflection (removing the guard) puzzles, you'll be able to see them in blitz play. Rheinfeld's 1001 combination book has a good selection of these.

Jul-27-05   erimiro1: Nice, elegant, easy and the only solution.
Jul-27-05   Stevens: Cool, i got this one. Rxg8 is a great removal of the guard. But the threat of mate means that the black rook is soon picked off.

  SamuelS: I thought it was 35. Rh8 (threatening Qxh6#) Kxh8 36. Qxf6+ Kg8 (36...Kh7 37. Qxf7+ Kh8 38. Rd8+ Qf8 39. Rxf8#) 37. Rd8+ Qf8 38. Rxf8+ Kxf8 39. Qxb2 but then I realized that after 35...Bg5 36. Qb8 there was no clear winning continuation, although it seems that the Black king will be forced to the center of the board (which usually hints that there is a checkmate).

SamuelS: OK, replaying to myself: 35. Rh8 Be5 wins the queen ;-)
Jul-27-05   Stevens: <35. Rh8 Be5 wins the queen ;-)> yes, there is that too! ;-)

Jul-27-05   Happypuppet: Awww, this would have made a better game of the day, when the name Stuart Conquest would have made a really great pun.

Just kidding <chessgames>, this was a good pick for a puzzle.

Richard Taylor: I saw everything except Kh7 hmm... good puzzle though..
Jul-27-05   Shokwave: It took me about 5 minutes to see this one...strangely, the very first move I looked at was the correct one, but I failed to see the continuation. It wasn't until I tried some queen sacs that I came back to it and saw that the fork eventually worked.
Jul-27-05   alexandrovm: how about 35. Rg8+ Kxg8 36. Qxf6 with a mate net to follow (rook on d3 and queen on f6). Black must lose his queen or lose the game
Jul-27-05   alexandrovm: well, I did missed the queen fork, but the result was ok
Jul-27-05   rollerblader: <yeats1939> If the queen goes to b8, the bishop just moves to d4 & you cant get the fork, and you cant get a mate either because the king can just move to f6. If the rook goes to d8, the bishop just takes it.
Jul-27-05   John Doe: I didn't get it, and it's not that hard of a puzzle. I suck.
Jul-27-05   The 3 Gambiteers: I got in with seconds. Just happened to be the first thing I spoted.

YouRang: Like Shokwave, the first move I looked at was 35. Rg8+. Unlike Shokwave, I was too dumb to notice the nice fork that came out of it. :(

kevin86: White sacs the rook to gain a bishop AND a rook-along with a few mate threats. A good deal to take, right?

YouRang: <rollerblader> Is that the worst avatar ever, or what?
Jul-27-05   dac1990: There was big Conquest for white in this puzzle.
Jul-27-05   Eggman: So, is White definitely winning after 37...Rxa2 38.Rd8+ Qxd8 39.Qxd8+ Kg7 (or 39...Kh7)?
Jul-27-05   sharpnova: queen vs. rook. you tell me
Jul-27-05   MarkN: okay, im dumb-will someone please explain to me why the black knight cannot take the white pawn on e4 on the 4th or 5th moves?
Jul-27-05   beatgiant: <why the black knight cannot take the white pawn on e4 on the 4th or 5th moves?> White has Qa4+, forking king and knight, so after Black answers the check then Qxe4 winning a piece.

al wazir: <Eggman: So, is White definitely winning after 37...Rxa2 38.Rd8+ Qxd8 39.Qxd8+ Kg7 (or 39...Kh7)?> I agree. Make your opponent earn the win. Nobody ever won (or drew) by resigning. If black stations his (her?) rook on a5 with pawns on a7 and b6, white's king can't easily get past the fourth rank.

  al wazir: His. Sorry.
Jul-29-05   MarkN: ah. thank you <beatgiant> I'm really not THAT bad, maybe i was tired (I'd like to beleive that)
