What a cunning b....
She knows perfectly well that White will play 31.Nf3??, a move that is good in every way, except... |

 | | Penguincw: Hmm. I struggled forever on this puzzle, until I saw it was black to move, which I got. If 34.Kb1, 34...Rh1+ wins the queen (34...Qxe4 is probably good too). |

 | | PawnSac: This is a cute little puzzle...
When I first looked at the game position I immediately saw ..Qd8 34.Re8? Ra4+ 35.Kb1 Rh1+ but realized it was only a "cheapo" because white could simply play 34.b4 and black loses the initiative. SO, then after i saw Qa4! i thought "Sweet. Judit.. darlin' you get a high 5 on that one!" |

Jul-23-14 | | gars: Maybe old stuff, <Phony Benoni>, but I found it beautiful all the same. |
|
Jul-23-14 | | kevin86: Oops, white runs headlong into a back row mate. |
|
Jul-23-14 | | dfcx: 33...black to move
The white rook on e4 is overloaded.
33...Qa4+ wins at least two rooks.
A) 34. Rxa4 Rxa4+ 35 Kb1 Rh8+

and mates soon.
B) 34. Kb1 Rh1+ 35. Qe1 Qxe4!

36. Rg1 Qxe1+ 37. Rxe1 Rxe1+ and wins two rooks |
|
Jul-23-14 | | perhaps: can anyone tell me how it would be 32 Re8+ and black either looses the queen and soon the horse or get mated in 2 moves if the King moves to a7. Or am I missing something? Thanks |
|
Jul-23-14 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: <perhaps>,
There's no mate, because Black's knight can interpose at d4. |
|
Jul-23-14 | | Maatalkko: Was this played in a tournament? If so, did this make Polgar the youngest player to defeat a GM at that time? |
|
Jul-23-14 | | perhaps: Thanks "Cheapo by the Dozen", now you know that I am just getting close to be a beginner! |
|
Jul-23-14 | | BOSTER: Jonathan : <Stared at it for ever so long and thought >.
If only I could shift the knight at the beginning of the game after 13.Be3, 14.f3, 15.Na4 16.Nb6. |
|
Jul-23-14 | | BOSTER: White should play 31.Nb1 and then Nc3-Na4-Nb6 , and any strategy says this. |
|
Jul-23-14 | | TheBish: J D Tisdall vs Judit Polgar, 1988 Black to play (33...?) "Medium/Easy"
Black wins with the x-ray attack 33...Qa4+!, which either mates or wins major material. A. 34. Rxa4 Rxa4+ 35. Kb1 Rh1+ and mate in a couple.
B. 34. Kb1 Rh1+ 35. Qe1 Qxe4 and now if 36. Rg1 Rxg1 37. Qxg1 Rh1 wins the house. |

Mar-19-24 | | thegoodanarchist: <And that's all she wrote> is a line from the song "Dear John", by country music legend Hank Williams. It is the first line of the refrain, so it occurs multiple times in the song. Hank Williams is known as "The Hillbilly Shakespeare" due to his lyrical genius. He died of heart failure on New Years Day, 1953, only 29 years of age. |

 | | Sally Simpson: Conway Twitty (1933 – 1993) had a song called; 'And That's All She Wrote.' Well, I came home this mornin'
There was a note hanging on my door
She said, ''This time I'm a leavin' you
And I won't be back no more.''
Yeah, yeah and that's all
That's all she wrote.
I'm in the process of re-writing it to bring it up to date; "I woke up this morning and there was an email..." |
|
Mar-19-24 | | goodevans: <Once> was no doubt right a decade ago in identifying White's fatal mistake, 31.Nf3, but I'd say the malady took root eight moves earlier when, in his haste to create some fairly trivial threats, White let his opponent open the h-file. Allowing Black's rooks free rein on that file increased his defensive troubles tenfold. <23.Bxe7> was most definitely called for. |

 | | Teyss: Hi Geoff,
Almost up to date, nowadays it would be "I woke up this morning and there was a tweet..."Younger generations would post an interpretative dance on tiktok:
"This time I'm a leavin' you-ou-ou
And I won't be back no mo'-o'-o'."
For the next generation it will be: "I wok tis morn, was msg in me brain implant..." Note how fortunately we will simplify spelling and grammar. Anyhow, the game. 31.Nf3 was indeed a mistake, but who could have expected such a dashing answer form an 11-year old? SF recommends 31.Rxh4 eventually giving up the a5 or g5 Pawn (-1.3 at 33 ply). |

Mar-19-24
 | | Sally Simpson: Hi Teyss,
What is a tweet?
Yes 31.Nf3 looks like the move. It practically forces Black to trade their beautiful Knight on e5. I'd of played 31.Nf3. The h1 Rook stays on h1 to cover flight squares, you do not expect it to move backwards to h3. Backward attacking Rook moves, I hate them. |
