Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-07-09  Maynard5: A complex battle. Initially, the game evolves along slow positional lines, with neither side gaining any significant advantage. Starting around move 45. Polugaevski appears to overestimate his chances, and attacks too aggressively with 50. Qb7+. Possibly, he overlooked that 50. ... Kg6 51. Qxb5 Qd3+ would win back the piece with check. After 52. Qc8, white's queen is out of action, while Black's is well placed to win the b-pawn. A very nice tactical finesse by Kholmov.
