 | | scormus: Well, certainly needed a bit more thought than I expected on a Monday. I was fairly confident until I looked at the text 29 .... Qa6. Oh, I must have misse something, then I saw 1/2-1/2 and realised that perhaps wasn't right. Relieved ro see that <SF, Brenin, etc> agree with .... Qf2 |
May-09-22 | | Cellist: I found another solution. It also wins, although it is not nearly as good as Qf2: 29. ... Rfd8. Here is the engine analysis:
-2.50 (35 ply) 30.Rxd8 Qxd8 31.Qb1 Bd2 32.Ng7 a5 33.g3 Rc1+ 34.Qxc1 Bxc1 35.Re8 Qb8 36.Rxb8+ Kxb8 37.Nf5 b5 38.Kg2 a4 39.Nd4 a3 40.Nc6+ Kb7 41.Nb4 Be3 42.Kh3 Bd2 43.Nc2 a2 44.Kg4 Kc6 45.Kf5 Kd5 46.Kg4 Ke5 47.h4 h6 48.hxg5 hxg5 49.Kh3 Kf5 50.Nd4+ Kf6 51.Nc2 b4 52.Kg2 Bc3 53.Kf2 Ke5 54.Ke3
Much more complicated and tough than the usual Monday. |
May-09-22 | | Shrinarayanan: This for a Monday? Feels like a Sunday Puzzle. |
May-09-22 | | Shrinarayanan: I see it now - Qf2 is what we needed to find. Amazing move! |
May-09-22 | | Brenin: <Cellist>: Nice find, but I think you mean 29 ... Red8, not Rfd8. Despite the modest engine score of -2.50 this line looks like a clear win for Black: once the heavy artillery is off the board, by move 37, it's a B vs N endgame with 4P each, but with Black's 2P vs P on the Q-side and White's remote K deciding the issue. A typical position where the B is more effective than the N. |
May-09-22 | | Cellist: <Brenin> Yes, I meant Red8 (sorry for the mistake). Indeed, as you point out, the endgame is clearly won. At the end of the line I posted, the engine rates Black's advantage at 147. |

 | | chrisowen: Kestrel like humor Qa6 fine cross out a Qf2 go bet give ahead ho claw back ooh ji Ng3 give it doesnt work as Qe1 flush cross out. |
May-09-22
 | | Breunor: For me, I found Qf2 pretty quickly; however I don't think I would have found it if I hadn't been told there is a winning move. |
May-09-22 | | Pawn Slayer: Tough for a Monday.
I got ...Qf2, but it took a while. |
May-09-22
 | | chrisowen: Dank it about jettison good game acrid a6 I ask Qf2 bug; |
May-09-22 | | landshark: .... Qf2 was my choice.
Only took a minute - but in typical shark fashion I wasn't thorough enough - Didn't consider the Ng3 defensive idea. Of course when I looked at the position after Qf2 I quickly saw Ng3 and then I saw ...Qe1+ which does the job anyway. This is illustrative of how I play chess: some moves are much better than I realize, others much worse.
Such is the life of the average club player. |
May-09-22 | | Stanco: Qf2 was my choice as well |
May-09-22
 | | paulalbert: Instead of mutual zugzwang we have mutual back rank mate ideas to worry about, but calculated quickly that the Qf2 idea works. It reminded me a little of the famous Bernstein vs. Capablanca game , Capa's combination having some similar elements. As some others suggest, perhaps a little too subtle to be a Monday puzzle, but definitely beautiful and instructive. |
May-09-22
 | | FSR: Qf2 is the traditional move in such positions. |
May-09-22
 | | moronovich: You have a point, <FSR> ! ;) |
May-09-22 | | saturn2: Teschner is the author of the only endgame book I read. |
May-09-22
 | | MissScarlett: It was either very good or very bad. |
May-09-22
 | | Diademas: The general consensus is very good <MS> |
May-09-22 | | whiteshark: Back rank tactics at work: <29...Qf2!!>, and that's it. |
May-09-22 | | Louben: Certainly not "very easy" as seing Qe1 after Ng3 is far from obvious... |
May-09-22
 | | moronovich: <Louben: Certainly not "very easy" as seing Qe1 after Ng3 is far from obvivious...> But we shall always look for back rank mate, in these positions. |
May-09-22 | | AlicesKnight: I found ... Qf2 to look promising before I looked at the result of the game, so was surprised to see the continuation. It seems I was not alone .... |
May-10-22
 | | noads4me: Very easy,my *** ! |
May-10-22
 | | Honza Cervenka: Quite interesting is the fact that Portisch missed another winning shot exploiting weak back rank also in game Hort vs Portisch, 1969 played in the same tournament. |
May-10-22
 | | perfidious: The idea overlooked in the game with Hort was inexplicable, being straightforward as it was; this was a tricky business. |
