Sep-23-06  syracrophy: The chess puzzles of this week are "find the winning moves that the players of the game missed":-P lol
Sep-23-06  Gowe: Gowe: Ok, <Madman99x>, you are right, i think. But, what say Crafty about 39... Rd8 Is that a winning move or there is something to do? I mean, should I resign after Rd8?, because, if you say so, I surely do.

Sep-23-06  Madman99X: After Rd8, I think there are still many variations to calculate OTB, so I don't know that I would resign after it, but black can certainly force a win in all variations.
Sep-23-06  dzechiel: Missed this one. I became convinced that the key move had to be 39...g3. <sigh>
Sep-23-06  greensfield: Chose 39...Qd3+ and 39...g3 as candidate moves. Then stumbled on the on the right combination of the two for John Nunn's winning line. Eurika it's the weekend.
Sep-23-06  lilfoohk: I got today's in 13 secs

New Record!

I am just aiming to sac where seems impossible, this is always a clue , creativity

Sep-23-06  Tariqov: I saw Qd3+ and saw all the way to Rxg2, but i chosed 39.Qd3+!!Rxd3 40.Bxd3+Ne2 41.Rxe2!? and any move should(i think) for example

1)41.Qxe2 Is met by Rxg1+ with a big advantage.
2)41.Qd4Rxb2+ 42.Qxd3 and Rxg1+ and Black is better.

and so on, is this another alternative??Any refutations?

Tariqov

Sep-23-06  dorn: I chose 39...f3, calculating:

A. 40.gxf3 gxf3 41.Nxf5 Qxf5 42.Qg3 Re4 43.Rc3 Rg4 44.Rxf3 Rxg1+ 45.Kxg1 Qxf3.

B. 40.Nxf5 leads to the same position 40...Qxf5 41.gxf3 (41.Rcd1 Rh2! ).

According to Fritz the best line for White after 39...f3 is

C. 40.Rcd1 Bd7! 41.b3 g3 42.Qxg3 fxg2+ 43.Qxg2 Bh3 44.Qxh3 Rf8+! 45.Rf2 Rxf2+ 46.Kxf2 Rxh3 47.Nxh3 Qh4+ ( ).

LIFE Master AJ: I looked at it for about 30 seconds ... then I gave up, and looked at the answer. (I did not seriously consider ...Qd3+ here. This is why my checklist for tournaments includes the step, "CHECK ALL CHECKS!!!")

Sep-23-06  Kwesi: I was lucky today and got it this time =). For me it was just a case of whether I considered that particular 'stupid check' or not
Sep-23-06  zb2cr: Found it, after only about a minute of head-scratching. First saturday puzzle I've gotten in several weeks!
Sep-23-06  beenthere240: After 39...;Rd8 what happens if White plays 40. Nxf5?
Sep-23-06  turielQNAC: (hi i'm new here... actually this is my first post...)

can someone explain to me what black should play after 39... Qd3+ 40. Qe2

i'm not so good at chess and i really need someone to explain me why this move is not analyzed by anyone... (is it so bad?... still i can't see it) thanx

Sep-23-06  GeauxCool: Qd3+, solved it!

I had enough time to work out a few moves and responses and saw that different lines were good for black!

OhioChessFan: <can someone explain to me what black should play after 39... Qd3+ 40. Qe2>

<turielQNAC> 40...Rxg1+

Sep-23-06  Swapmeet: <turielQNAC><OhioChessFan>

White is fine after 39...Qd3+ 40.Qe2 Rxg1+ Kxg1.

Winning for black should be 40...Rxe2 41.Rxd3 Bxd3 42.Ndxe2 f3

Sep-23-06  CheckWhat: After 39...Qd3+ 40.Re2 g3 41.Qe2

What's black going to respond that would make any difference?

Sep-23-06  blingice: Yea, I got it, I didn't even consider any other lines...
Sep-23-06  capablancakarpov: 39...Rd8 and 39...f3 are better moves than 39...Qg3+, who is the third pick of Hiarcs 10, and the hardest way of win. The main line given by Hiarcs 10 after Qd3+ is:

39...Qd3+ 40.Qe2 Re3 41.Rxd3 Bxd3 42.c5 Rxg1 43.Kxg1 Bxe2 44.cxb6 cxb6 45.Nxc6 Rd3 46.Ne5 Rd5 47.Ng6 f3 48. gxf3 gxf3 49.Kf2 Rd2 50.Re3 Rxb2 51.Ne5 Rxa2 52.Nxf3 Bxf3 54.Kxf3, so i don´t think that 39.Qd3+ deserves any exclamation, 39.Rd8! in the other hand, wins almost instantly.

Sep-23-06  Jackz: Isn't ambulance spelled wrong in the annotation?
Sep-23-06  turielQNAC: <Swapmeet> i will agree with <OhioChessFan>

<CheckWhat> hmmm.. i think you misstyped sth here...

<capablancakarpov> that was (supposed to be) my point (well not exactly the whole line you wrote, but the fact that it is not a clear win)

<Swapmeet> <OhioChessFan> <capablancakarpov> thank you all

ps.: i hope not every Saturday puzzle comes to situations like this one...

Sep-23-06  Sami Jr: I picked 39...f3. Fritz confirms it is a better move than 39 ...Qd3. However the best followup according to Fritz is: 39... Qe5 40. Nde2 f3 41. Ng3 Rh2 42. Nxf3 gxf3 43. Qxf3 Rg8 44. Re1 Qxg3 45. Qxg3 Rxg3 46. Kg1 Rh4 47. c5 Rd3 48. Rde2
Sep-24-06  capablancakarpov: <turielQNAC:>Yes, saturday puzzle´s question should have been " Black to move and NOT win ". According Hiarcs 10, no less than 6 moves gave black more than 2 point evaluation advantage.

Hiarcs 10, 15 ply 160 kN/s, 20 minute analysis

1) Td8 (-3.29)
2) f3 (-2.80)
3) Ad7 or Ac8 (-2.57)
4) Qd3+ (-2.48)
5) Qe5 (-2.40)
6) g3 (-2.09)

Sep-24-06  kevin86: Another case where the master missed the brilliant win. White would have been in a nasty vise!
