Mateo: This game looks weird to me. Salov made a strange choice to sac a pawn in the ending and then Van Wely lost his way and even the game!

25... e4 (?) was quiet unexpected. Before this move, there was no real danger that White takes the c pawn, because after Nc5 Bc5, Rc5 Rc5, Rc5 Bf3, ef Rd3. But now, at the end of such variation, Black cannot take no longer the d pawn. Better seems 25... Ra5.

28... Rd2!?. It seems that Salov, who loses a pawn, makes the choice to avoid trades. Another variation: 28... Bc5 29. Rc5 Rc5 30. Rc5 Rd1 31. Kh2 Rd2 32. Kh3 Ra2 33. Rc6 Ra3 with some hopes of a draw for Black.

30. Nd3?!. Better 30. Ne4 winning a tempo to take the c pawn. Now Black has drawing prospects, as after 30... Ba3!, the White Rook on c1 has to go to a passive outpost. White's position becomes very passive.

34. Nd3?!. Better 34. Ne4 f5! 35. Nc5 Rdd2 =.

40. Rf1?!. Better 40. Rb7 Rg3 41. Kh1 .
