Jun-15-15  zb2cr: 30. Ra1+ is the move.

If 30. ... Kxa1; 31. Qa3#.

If 30. ... Kxb3; 31. Qa3# (note the White Bishop covering c2 & c4).

If 30. ... Kb2; 31. Qa3+, Kc3; 32. Rc1# (note the White Knight covering d4).

Jun-15-15  Abdel Irada: How could Black ever have imagined it was correct, or indeed survivable, to send his king meandering to a2? The only possible outcome was a spectacular victory for White.

Premium Chessgames Member
perfessor: I'm pretty sure my flag would fall before I saw Ra1+. I would have played Qb4, threatening both Qa5 and Qd2.
Premium Chessgames Member
Oxspawn: Canít wait to see how they got to this position but the black king looks exhausted.

30. Ra1+ Kxa1 or Kxb3 or Kb2
31. Qa3#
On the other hand, if black could have first move...

Jun-15-15  waustad: Yes, I got slowed down by looking at a queen sack first too, though it quickly became obvious that it didn't work. Often Monday puzzles come quicker than this one for me.
Jun-15-15  FISCHERboy: 30. Ra1! (...Kxa1 31. Qa3#) Had to triple check it, though. Hahaha! :-p
Jun-15-15  stacase: It Monday. Queen Sacrifice not work Black King get away. Try Rook. Yeah, White Queen squash King like bug (-:
Jun-15-15  TheTamale: It looks like the Black king is having a sleep-over with the White pieces.
Premium Chessgames Member
Mating Net: Much tougher than expected given that the White Queen is en prise.
Premium Chessgames Member
  patzer2: A Monday mate-in-three with 30. Ra1+ Kb2; 31. Qa3+, Kc3; 32. Rc1# is easy enough.

Black's best shot at improvement might be to avoid <11...Bb7 12. Nxf6+ > and instead try 11... Nxd5! when best play might continue 12. exd5 Bb7 13. a4 Bxd5 14. axb5 exd4 = (-0.24 @ 20 depth, Deep Fritz 14).

Jun-15-15  dfcx: This is a little harder than the usual Monday. White's queen is being attacked by black rook, so the movement of queen in restricted to the diagnonal. Qa3+ does not work, so the only choice is

30.Ra1+ Kxa1? 31.Qa3#

So black has to refuse the rook.

30.Ra1+ Kb2 31.Qa3+ Kc3 32.Rc1#

All four white pieces are involved in the final mate!

Premium Chessgames Member
kevin86: Harder than usual as the expected sac is not forced. Mate WILL come quickly, regardless.
Premium Chessgames Member
whiteshark: We are not ready to wrestle with Monday yet.
Premium Chessgames Member
Lighthorse: 30.Ra1 was fairly easy to see as the main choice, but following the resulting black King options to make sure it resulted in mate was a bit tricky. Definitely this felt more like a Tuesday puzzle.
Jun-15-15  BOSTER: "One man on the field isn't a soldier", even the King.
Jun-15-15  Nichth: After 31...Kc3 32.b4# is a fun alternative to 32.Rc1#

Bubo bubo: Black is up the exchange, but his king has totally gone astray, allowing White to force mate with 30.Ra1+ Kxa1/Kxb3 31.Qa3# or 30...Kb2 31.Qa3+ Kc3 32.Rc1#
Jun-15-15  haydn20: After 30 Ra1+ Kb2 31 Qa3+ Kc3 then
32. b4# looks a bit more elegant to me, but mate is mate.
Premium Chessgames Member
Longview: I agree this one took longer than usual, it is not a typical position seen for analysis. I too found myself moving the white Q to various locations looking for a forcing action. I did grapple with the black rook controlling the c-file which suggests the power of that sort of thing. No wonder that open files are grabbed by rooks and left to hang on. It just reduces the board by 8 squares (1/8th of the total, as much as 25% of the free space) for the opposition! I tried moving the Q to various squares (b3, e6) but nothing was forcing until I saw the Ra1+ and its sequelae.
Jun-15-15  TheaN: Monday 16 June 2015 <30.?>

A Monday is a Monday, but anyone going for 30.Qa3+ will lose this game badly. Rook then... ah yes.

<30.Ra1+ Kb2> when black accepts or captures Pb3, 31.Qa3# follows. Instead: <31.Qa3+ Kc2 32.Rc1# 1-0> is mate in three instead of two. Bit complicated for a Monday, not hard.

Premium Chessgames Member
sycophante: Having your Black King on b2 square by move 27 must be a bit uncomfortable.
Jun-15-15  Kyudaime: 30. Ra1+ 1 - 0
Jun-16-15  JohnBoy: Like <Abdel> said ... If black's in this position something has already gone seriously wrong.
