This game was played in the summer of 1938 at the <All-Union 1st Category Tournament>.

It was not played in Moscow, but rather in Gorky (now Nizhny Novogorad).

Playing in Group Two (of four groups), <Smyslov> shared 1st with Anatoly Ufimtsev and the ill-starred Mark Moiseevich Stolberg.

In recognition of this achievment, Smyslov was awarded the Candidate Master title.
