Feb-01-04  sac 4 mate: This is a "grandmaster draw" that came back to bite Smyslov later, since he finished this tournament 1/2 point behind Fischer after Bobby's last-round loss to Geller.

From Smyslov's point of view, a good practical decision, wrapping up second outright, as he would hardly expect Fischer to lose as White to Geller.

As an aside, it should be noted that Smyslov scored only one win with White against Gligoric in his entire career, despite an edge of 8-6 in decisive games.

Fischer did lose to Geller, but who's to say he would have if this game had still been going and in the balance? If he hadn't known that First Place was wrapped up, Fischer might have played differently and not lost. It's hard to second guess this stuff. But you're right, Smyslov was probably kicking himself afterwards regardless.

Aug-23-12  ewan14: I read somewhere this game finished very early ( no surprise by the moves ) , Fischer therefore knew he had first place and so did not hold back in attacking Geller in their ( classic ) game
Aug-23-12  Kinan: Yet, another justification of Fischer's losses.
