  zanshin: <russep> Good question! Since the chess engine in my head couldn't see anything obvious, I ran it by Fritz 10. After 1 hour and 19-ply, it came up with the following ... hardly a reason for Black to resign.

1: Vasily Smyslov - A M Lacourrelle, 02, Las Palmas 1972

1. = (-0.15): 23.e6 fxe6 24.Qxg6+ Bg7 25.Ne5 Rf8 26.Nxd7 Qxd7 27.Rxe6 Qf7 28.Rae1 Qxg6 29.Bxg6 a5 30.a4 bxa4 31.bxa4 Rab8 32.Rc6

2. (-0.39): 23.Qd2 bxc4 24.bxc4 Nh7 25.Qxf4 Bg7 26.h4 Nf8 27.Re2 Rb8 28.Rae1 Rb2 29.h5 g5

3. (-0.45): 23.exf6 Qxf6 24.a4 bxa4 25.bxa4 Rab8 26.Rab1 Rxe1+ 27.Rxe1 Bg7 28.Nd2 Rb2 29.Ne4 Qe7 30.d6 Qe5

Aug-28-07   russep: if the engine only evaluated this as equal or slightly better for black it's interesting how this is won for white must have been on time

  zanshin: It's only move 23! But since I can't think of another reason, I'll have to agree it must be a loss due to time. If so, I wish the game had an annotation like 1-0 (t) so that we wouldn't be kept wondering.
