Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-09-02  bishop: 12d5!even though that square is guarded 5 times is a very good move.Black had to play Be7 on his tenth or eleventh move.
Aug-16-03  PVS: An excellent move as was 13.Bg5. Do you think black should have played the other knight to d5?
Aug-17-03  Shadout Mapes: 12...Nfxd5 loses a piece after 13.a3 Nc6 14.Nxd5. Black is pinned in so many ways that a wrong step is disasterous.
Aug-17-03  Kenneth Sterling: I see what you mean. That leaves 12...Bd5 13. Bg5 and black is still in a bad way. Do either of you gentlemen have a suggestion?
Aug-17-03  Shadout Mapes: 12...Bxd5 13.a3 still works because black's bishop is pinned. Black's plan of moving his knight in front of white's d pawn was a good one (blockade), but Spassky's 12th move just outright refuted the whole concept (black should've castled first). I believe 9...cxd4 might have been bad, and 15...exd5 might have held on longer.

Did I mention Spassky was 12 when he played this?

Dec-28-06  ToTheDeath: Classic clearance sacrifice. The knight goes to f5 and the game is over. Lovely miniature.
Jun-18-09  LIFE Master AJ: I discuss this game on my "Best Short Games" page. (http://www.ajschess.com/lifemastera...) This game is annotated on the following page, http://www.lifemasteraj.com/old_af-....
Jun-19-09  LIFE Master AJ: This game is - of course - given in many chess books.

Two favorites are Irving Chernev's: "1000 Best Short Games of Chess," and Andrew Soltis's: "The Best Games of Boris Spassky."

The intro in the Soltis book (Game #01) states: "First fame came to young Boris at age 12 when this zippy miniature found its way into chess magazines all over the world."

Jun-19-09  LIFE Master AJ: Soltis gives Black as "Aftonov."
Jun-19-09  LIFE Master AJ: Besides my online analysis, I just finished a (new/second) look with the latest chess tools ... (to include Rybka and Fritz 11.)
Sep-28-09  kooley782: Lovely demonstration of 12 year old Spassky's developing style. Surprising that he played 1.d4 as a kid before discovering 1.e4.
Sep-28-09  AnalyzeThis: After White's 11th move:

This is a position that illustrates one of the many limitations of Nimzovich's <My System>. Black here plays:

11.... Nb4

Which strives Nimzo's idea of setting up a blockade of the isolated pawn. Many a Nimzo disciple has been astonished here to find that 12. d5 gives white a clear advantage, bordering on an outright win!

Correct is 11... Na5! which Nimzo would have condemned ("Knight on the Rim is dim") and black concedes to white only his normal opening advantage.

Oct-14-09  Ychromosome: Look at black's pawn structure after move 16!!
Oct-27-09  WhiteRook48: 21 Qxf6! is a double threat where black cannot defend against both 22 Ne7+ and 22 Qg7#
Feb-05-11  Lennonfan: How is 12.d5 bordering on an outright win here for white? Providing black plays N.b4 on move 11...

lost in space: Saw this game today for the first time. Holy moses, what a brilliant game. Will have a deeper lock! How white played in this game is exactly my cup of tea ...but mostly I not brilliant enough to bring home the win (or to find the right way to open the game)
