offramp: An exciting draw. Larsen starts an attack during which he sacrifices the exchange. But black has too many pieces near his own king and defends without too many problems. On move 38 Larsen avoids a draw, but soon afterwards the foot is clearly on the other boot and Spassky's ♕ and ♖ are hovering dangerously near the white king. Spassky settles for a draw; did he miss a win anywhere?
Feb-27-15  Howard: Good question ! Did Spassky miss a win here ? He was after all, the exchange up for some time.

Retireborn: After 21.Rxf6! Larsen always has good compensation for the exchange, provided he keeps the queens on. Spassky's king is too exposed and his pawns are too devalued for him to win.

Traps for White to avoid: 25.c5? f5 and 54.Kf3? Rf1+ 55.Ke2 Qxg2+ or 54.Kf2? Qf4+

Feb-27-15  Howard: What would I do without Retireborn around ?! He just solved a nagging matter in my mind regarding Fischer--Gligoric, 1962 (Varna Olympiad).

Keep up the good work !

Retireborn: <Howard> I'd like to see this game properly annotated by a GM.... in the meantime there's the question as to whether Larsen would have risked defeat by playing 28.Nd7 (attacks the pinned knight) f6 29.Bxe5 fxe5 30.Qf8+ Rg8 [not 30...Qxf8 31.Nxf8] 31.Qxe7 Rxe7 32.Nxc5 Reg7 33.g4 h5 34.Ne4 hxg4 35.h4, followed by Kg2, Ng5. I think White is OK, but this is playing for a draw rather than a win.

Honza Cervenka: 24.Ne2 with idea 25.Nf4 was better.
