Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-15-04  Knight13: 17. fxg4 hxg4 and Black mates with 18... Qxh3. 12. hxg4?? hxg4 13. Nh2 or d2 and 13... Qxh2#/Qh2#.

  Honza Cervenka: <Knight13> 17.fxg4 hxg4(?) 18.Bxg4 keeps white still in game. 17.fxg4 Qxh3+ 18.Kxh3 hxg4# is the right solution.

Instead of 11...h5 Steinitz could have played simply 11...Nxf3+ 12.gxf3 Bxh3 13.Bb5+ Kf8 threatening 14...Bxf1 or 14...Qh4 with mating attack.

Oct-15-04  Knight13: <Honza Cervenak> Oh, yeah. That's a much better idea. Thanks for correcting me.

fredthebear: After the Black knight and queen sacrifices, 18...hxg4# as Honza Cervenka gives is a double check Greco's Mate on the open h-file.

Logically developing a piece with 15.Be3 instead does not help White. Black continues to play a similar attack with the goal of opening the h-file.

This sacrificial attacking gem seems worthy of more attention. Perhaps "fishin' pole" attacks are regarded as too routine but it still requires skilled foresight.
