| mike1: well, Suba dived, yes. But he was clearly winning before getting too
materialistic. Something like 32.Qb3
should do the trick |

| newzild: Cool game.
I'm not so sure white was "clearly winning". After 32.Qb3, for example, which helps defend h3, black can still play something like 32...Qxe8 and maybe 33...Nf6!, threatening 34...Rxg2! A lot depends on what white plays, of course.
However, black's only the exchange and a pawn down with an attack as compensation. |

| zooter: a repetition of moves at 39 due to time pressure? |

| gandu: I just don't understand why White did not simply take the knight: 33 g2xh3? I do not think Black has much left to do after this. |
 |

| newzild: Gandu, if
33.gh
then 33...Qh4
and now:
34.Ng1 Qf5
or 34.Qb3 Qxf2
and mate is unavoidable in both cases. |

| newzild: ...hm. But white can play Nf7+. So maybe things aren't so simple... |

| sfm: <gandu: why ... White did not simply take the knight: 33 g2xh3?

We try
33.-,Qh4 34.Nf7+,Kg5 35.Nxe5,Qxh3+ 36.Kg1,Kh8+ 37.Ng3,Rxg3+ 38.fxg3,Qxg3 39.Kf1 and White wins.
That wasn't much, right. So where's the enhancement? |

| SuperPatzer77: <zooter> It must have been time pressure till the 40th move had been made. It was additional time control such as additional 20 moves for one hour, you know. William Nicholas Watson doesn't want to see the red flag fall as the time expires before the 40th move. At the 41st move, he found a winning line when he captured the White Rook at d2 with 41...Qxd2. | Jaburu: See the position after 26.Qb6 with the final position of checkmate: the Queen is moved where is separate from your King, not could defend it of the checkmate. Interesting to think in this and to made conclusions!! |

| kevin86: What is the queen attacking at b6? A king on the next board? The move is bad-and the position suffers-because of it. |

| Brown: <virginmind: suba took silver medal at the world chess championship for veterans in bad zwischenahn(germany) this month.> In fact, Suba tied with Lawrence, and the tie-breaker rule was not clearly defined to all contestants before or during the tournament. Even the official website had it wrong during the tournament. I believe Suba is lodging a complaint. |

| AlaskaksalA: So no one sees why White cannot take the knight on move 33? I do not, and the Nf7+ threat seems strong. |

| tatarch: At first glance, what about 33.gxh3,Bxd6, 34.cxd6,Qh4, and then black has at least a perpetual check, right? Better than losing I guess, but maybe white wasn't playing for a draw at that point. |

I really don't know what Watson planned to play against gxh3... |
