Jun-30-04  drukenknight: Here is a nice way to play against the Scandanavian. Santassier, Dunst, van Geet, van Bellon, and Bogoljubov have all played this first 3 or 4 moves of this.

SUttles probably had gained some advantage. What about 28 Bxc6? also 33 Nxf7 may also be better.

  tpstar: I'll bet 23 ... Bxb4?! was tempting (24. Bxb4?? Ne3+) but this loses 2 pieces for a Rook after 24. Rxb4! Nxb4 25. Qxb7+ Kd7 26. Qxb4. 28. Bxc6 looks good, because 28 ... e2+!? 29. Ke1 Bh4+ 30. Nf2 bxc6 31. Nxe2 wins the passed Pawn outright, so 28 ... bxc6 29. Ng5 preventing 29 ... Bh4 while freeing the Ng1 from defending the Nh3.

IMlday: The surprising move is Suttles 4.d3!?
when the ordinary 4.Ng3 looks like an ordinary Bogo edge. He had his fixed ideas that he tried against anything. btw, at this point Furman would have been Karpov's coach/trainer.
Sep-05-05  lentil: <IMDay>perhaps it's better to say that suttles had his own 'book' and tried to get his opponents out of theirs and into his. as a minor disciple of his (so minor that he is totally unaware of my existence), i find 4. Ng3 completely repulsive...misplaced N and no potential for expansion on the K side. this position cries out for f4; presumably this was his plan in provoking ..d4 and..e5.

what perpetually amazes me is that suttles always seems to find some counterplay even if he is technically busted.
