Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-17-05  lentil: matulovich clearly underestimated his opponent! but what's the excuse for playing on 2 pieces down?!
Aug-17-05  aw1988: I think your statement solves that mystery...
Aug-17-05  paul dorion: That loss knocked Matulovic out of the candidates. It was his only loss against a player in the bottom half of the table.
Jan-24-06  aw1988: <lentil> Sorry, misread...
May-23-07  Resignation Trap: <<paul dorion> That loss knocked Matulovic out of the candidates. It was his only loss against a player in the bottom half of the table.>

This was round <four> of a 23-round tournament. A lot of unusual things can happen in the next 19 rounds (in fact, they did!).

Oct-19-15  jerseybob: I'm not sure white needs to answer 6..h5 with 7.h4; it might be an over-reaction. But it does commit him to castling long, and white's forces don't cooperate properly behind the lines, something that can often happen when castling long in a "Samisch" formation. 12.Nc1 might be an improvement on 12.Ng3, though it too has drawbacks. If not for that vulnerable pawn on h4, white could just aim for 00 with a good game.
Oct-20-15  PhilFeeley: Black's queen's bishop never moved and was hardly involved in the game. How often does that happen?
Oct-20-15  jerseybob: <PhilFeeley> True, it never moved, but I wouldn't say it was "hardly involved". From its base at c8 it guarded two key diagonals, and the pieces that did move out into battle couldn't have done their jobs without that cover.
