Though the suggested move has its own perils, it seems that Tal would have been in less trouble later if he had played 13 0-0-0, rather than just moving the R to d1 as he did. Besides the obvious benefit of castling, the suggested move also unpins the e4 N. It's quite possible Black would still win the game anyway, but it seems White's chances improve slightly with the change... |

I don't think like a grandmaster, but it seems to me that after 13.O-O-O, dxe4 14.fxg7,  xg5 checks, winning the farm. This is in contrast to 13. d1, where after 13...dxe4 14.fxg7, xg5 15.gxh8= White has a rook for two bishops and some pressure still. |
