Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-23-05  Poisonpawns: This game was played so badly by white that analysis is not needed!!No wonder Benko is an endgame specialist, because the middlegame was terrible.
Jul-23-05  Conan the Librarian: guess so. even average players know that when the Bishop is on h3 or their is a wedge pawn at f3, you have to guard your back rank.
Feb-17-06  Resignation Trap: One of my sources gives one more move pair: 30.Nc1 Qc2 and White lost on time.
Mar-17-07  vonKrolock: <19.e3>? Much better seems to be 19.h3 etc, for a start because the text move allows the exchange of the fianchetto B, and a considerable weakening of White K's position

<27.Rf8> If 27.Rb7, then Tal could have played à la himself 27...fe3! (best!) 28.Be3 Qf6 etc

Apr-05-07  Helios727: If white moves B or N to c1 in the final position, does black follow with 30.-, Qc2 ?
Apr-05-07  vonKrolock: Yes, it's sufficient, I presume

Opening of the Day
May-10-12  Peter62: vonKrolock suggests 19.h3 and indeed that is better after 19.--,Nxf3+ 20.exf3! Ne5 21.Qe2 and I would prefer Whites play. But Black can play tuffer with 19.--,Ne5! and then 20.Nxe5 dxe5! and now if 21.e3 e4 White tries the sacrifice 22.Nxe4 fxe4 23.Bxe4 Nf3+ /Nf5!? also refutes Whites play/ 24.Bxf3 Rxf3 25.Rb8 Be5! 26.Ra8 Qd7 winning or 25.Kg2 Qf8 26.Be1 Bf5 also winning. Whites best after 20.--,dxe5 is perhaps 21.f3 with a complicated position.

plang: 9 Nd2 is the most popular move; 9 Qd3 seems a bit awkward. In order to justify 10 Ng5!? it would have been necessary to follow it up with 11 e4 (or perhaps even 11 Ne6!?). As it turned out it was just a loss of time. 17 a4 might be an improvement. Note that 26 exf..e3 27 Re1..exd 28 Rxe7..Bxc3 29 Qa4..Bg4 loses for White. Tal played well but Benko was unrecognizable in this game.
