radu stancu: Well, he has no compensation for the loss of the a pawn, but it might be just an incomplete score sheet.

Bobwhoosta: White has none of the kingside attack he's supposed to have been developing in the sicilian, and his queenside will fall. It's easy to see black's pieces taking over the board.
Aug-09-05  notsodeepthought: The above are all sensible explanations, but I have a better one:

White is Paoli, Black is Tal.

Aug-09-05  shortsight: I guess resigned in an almost equel position against Tal is better than resigned later when Tal unleashed his magic and humiliated him with a splendid move that turn his win to a lose.

  tpstar: ChessBase 8.0 confirms this gamescore and result. Looks like the Pb5 falls pretty quickly = 21. Bxa3 Bxa3 22. Rb1 (otherwise 22 ... Bb2) Bb4, or 21. Bb2 Be5 22. Qd2 Bxc3 23. Bxc3 Rxb5 and now 24. Bxa5?? Nc4 & 25 ... Rxa5 wins.

Every once in a while, games stop because someone was about to blunder. Perhaps White played 21. f4??, then saw 21 ... Bc5 so he resigned before moving. Other ideas?

Aug-10-05  paul dorion: In a short while , White will be two pawns down with no counterplay and no complications. Who needs a better reason to resign? Strong players know they better keep their energy for the next game!
Aug-10-05  shortsight: <tpstar: ... Other ideas?> Perhaps diarrhoea? :)
