Feb-25-17  ughaibu: After 44.Qa8 why not forget about the queenside, make the king's position safe by 44...Qf5 and meet 45.Qa5 with g4?

  Sally Simpson: Hi ughaibu,

I think Black played it OK with 44...Qc3+ there is surely a perpetual in there, possibly better. I know Tal won this tournament but have no idea if Heinz Liebert had to win this to get into the prizes.

This page Game Collection: Tal at the Halle DSV International 1974 (thank you Jessie) indicates this game was played in the 14th round of a 15th round tournament. Perhaps if it had been played in an earlier round Black would taken the draw - but that is just me thinking a draw v Tal at any time would be good.

Feb-25-17  ughaibu: Sure, I think that Qc3 was also okay, I think Qa1 and Qa3 would also be fine, it just seems to me, intuitively, that pushing the g-pawn would be the most promising.

About drawing with Tal. . . . . wouldn't you prefer to win?

  Sally Simpson: Hi ughaibu,

I would prefer to win but how many players playing Tal thought they were winning ( and indeed some were) and went onto lose.

I'd take the draw and even with - posted on the scoreboard I'd fully expect to come back the next day and see it had been changed to 0-1.

Yes Tal was that good. :)
