Sep-29-22 | | saturn2: <Really easy as a Wednesday puzzle>
In my place it is already thursday which raises questions about the level of this puzzle more. |
|
Sep-29-22 | | mel gibson: <jrredfield: Actually Komodo Dragon prefers 32 c4 over 32 Qxe5+. Komodo Dragon doesn't look quite as deep as Stockfish (late move reduction isn't quite as drastic).> Hi Jrredfield,
I tried Stockfish 15 for a longer time than
4 months ago and got this:
32. Qxe5+
(32. Qxe5+ (♕g5xe5+ ♔d6xe5 ♗e3-f4+ ♔e5-d4 ♗f4xc7 ♔d4-e3 h2-h4
♗c8-d7 h4-h5 ♗d7-e8 ♗c7-f4+ ♔e3-d4 ♗a8-f3 ♗e8-f7 ♔g1-f2 ♗f7-g8 ♗f3-e2
♗g8-h7 ♗f4-e3+ ♔d4-e5 ♗e2-d3 ♗h7-f5 ♗d3xf5 e6xf5 ♔f2-f3 a6-a5 a2-a4 ♔e5-f6
♔f3-f4 ♔f6-e6 ♗e3-a7 ♔e6-d5 ♔f4xf5 ♔d5-c6 h5-h6 ♔c6-d6 ♗a7-e3 ♔d6-d7 h6-h7
♔d7-c6 g3-g4 ♔c6-d5 g4-g5 ♔d5-c4 h7-h8♖ ♔c4-d5 ♖h8-a8 ♔d5-c6 ♖a8xa5 ♔c6-d6
♖a5-a6+ ♔d6-d5 ♖a6-a8) +58.02/47 817)
score for White +58.02 depth 47.
If I force Stockfish to play 32. c4 and
giving it the same processing time:
2. c4
(32. c4 Bb7 (♗c8-b7 ♗a8xb7 ♕c7xb7 ♕g5-d8+ ♔d6-c6 ♕d8-e8+ ♔c6-d6
♕e8-f8+ ♔d6-c6 ♕f8-f3+ ♔c6-c7 ♕f3-f7+ ♔c7-b8 ♕f7-e8+ ♔b8-c7 ♕e8-e7+ ♔c7-c8
♕e7xe6+ ♕b7-d7 ♕e6xd7+ ♔c8xd7 b2-b3 ♔d7-e6 ♔g1-f2 ♗e5-f6 ♔f2-f3 ♔e6-f5
h2-h4 ♔f5-g6 c4-c5 ♗f6-d8 c5-c6 ♔g6-h5 ♗e3-f2 ♔h5-g6 g3-g4 ♔g6-f7 h4-h5
♔f7-e6 ♔f3-e4 ♔e6-d6 ♗f2-e3 ♗d8-h4 h5-h6 ♗h4-f6 h6-h7 ♔d6xc6 g4-g5 ♗f6-h8
♗e3-d4 ♗h8xd4) -24.04/36 822)
score for Black -24.04 depth 36.
So Stockfish 15 disagrees with Komodo Dragon but
both moves are very strong. |

Sep-29-22
 | | FSR: Pretty late in the week for a pseudo-queen sac, isn't it? |
|
Sep-29-22 | | Chessius the Messius: What can I say? "Wolfgang" is an appropriate name for a chess player :) |
|
Sep-29-22
 | | FSR: <Chessius the Messius> Dances with Wolves: Unzicker vs Uhlmann, 1962. I submitted the pun. |
|
Sep-29-22 | | goodevans: Is it Monday already? What happened to the weekend? |
|
Sep-29-22 | | Socrates2: Not quite a "medium" puzzle - it's a bit easier than that. |
|
Sep-29-22 | | GlennOliver: 32. Qg8 wins
But not as neatly as the given solution. |
|
Sep-29-22 | | TheaN: Where have I seen this before... oh wait yeah on CG. Twice. |

Sep-29-22
 | | Teyss: This game is becoming the "Safety Pin" POTD of the site: Monday puzzle in 2018, Tuesday puzzle in June of this year, now Thursday puzzle. *COMING SOON* THE EASIEST SUNDAY PUZZLE EVER. DON'T MISS IT, WILL BOOST YOUR SELF-CONFIDENCE. <agb2002> Thanks for this nice one. Found the first move (won't spoil) but on Black's best defence took the two Rs instead of going for mate. Half a point. For info if you want to include a link to a game before move x, just add "&m=x" at the end of the link, x.5 if it's Black to play. So in this case "chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=2077069&m=28": Steinitz vs Schlesser, 1863 |
|
Sep-29-22 | | AIC: I think I already saw this a while ago. Pretty easy to see for a Thursday... |
|
Sep-29-22 | | sfm: <Pretty late in the week for a pseudo-queen sac, isn't it?>
It's a new psychology education by CG.
At times people do not find even the easiest moves, because they don't believe they are there. Had this been rated 'Easy' I would have found it in a second. As 'Medium' I looked for something advanced and spent 10 or so. Wait for the 'Insane' on Sunday. There's a mate in one. |

Sep-29-22 | | jrredfield: <mel gibson So Stockfish 15 disagrees with Komodo Dragon but both moves are very strong.> Yes interesting that the two engines differ considerably in their search and evaluation heuristics, and yet fight for the two top spots in the ratings. Stockfish 14 64-bit 4CPU 3535

May-23-23
 | | perfidious: Most recently a Thursday POTD, it is recycled as a Tuesday, which seems a propos. |
|
May-23-23 | | Mayankk: Knew this one from last year. Tal being on the receiving side made it easier to recall. 32 Qxe5+ Kxe5 33 Bf4+. We have a skewer and the Black King can't go back to protect its Queen. It of course helped that White was already three pawns ahead. The Queen sac was just to rub it in and may not be necessary for a win. |
|
May-23-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: I guess this is enough; 32. Qxe5+ Kxe5 33. Bf4+ Kd4 34. Bxc7 |
|
May-23-23 | | Brenin: Rather too recent, and very easy. |
|
May-23-23
 | | Willber G: <TheaN: Where have I seen this before... oh wait yeah on CG. Twice.> Thrice. |
|
May-23-23 | | jrredfield: This is one of those positions where White has many options: 32 c4, b4, Qxe5+, Bf3 all win. There may be other winners but I didn't take the time to find any more. I initially chose the text move Qxe5+ but after more thought, I'm not sure that's the fastest route to victory. |
|
May-23-23 | | jrredfield: Just saw my post from last year. I checked again, and saw the same results. Komodo Dragon prefers 32 c4. |
|
May-23-23 | | mel gibson: I remembered this game.
I've already analysed it many times. |
|
May-23-23 | | landshark: Saw that in an instant. |
|
May-23-23 | | saturn2: The machine does not particularily blame 12...Ne5. as a mistake. But to it is. It allowed f4 e5 later.
You have to take 12....Nxd4 |
