notyetagm: The queen does not count as a defender if she gets trapped in the process of defending.

Knowing this tactical idea well wins Tal a pawn for nothing with 22 Nxg4!. <The Black queen does not count as a defender of the g4-pawn because she will be trapped if she defends this pawn by 22 ... Qxg4?? 23 Bh3 Qf3 24 Rd3.> Hence the Black g4-pawn is not loose but en prise and Tal simply wins a crucial pawn.

notyetagm: Look how careful Tal is to always keep in mind Black's threats down the half-open f-file, to the f2-square in particular.

The moves 9 Be3, 20 Nf4, and 25 Nd3 all meet potential threats to the critical f2-square, either by <DEFENDING> this square directly or <BLOCKING> the f-file.
