Sep-16-07  Skylark: I missed the key moves 32. e5! and 35. d6! I envisaged the knight sac, but I couldn't see that the whole point of kicking the queen from its perch was to introduce the light-squared bishop into the battle and to block the opposing rook off on the 6th rank. Fantastic stuff!

MostlyAverageJoe: <al wazir: I wonder how white would have won if black had captured the P on e5 with the N.>

Two variants, both bad for black:

32. ... Nxe5 33. Bf6! Ng6 34. Rxh5 (and now Hiarcs says the best thing for black is Qe5 and B-Q exchange).

32. ... Nxe5 33. Bf6! Bxf6 34. Rxf6 Ng6 35. Qh6

Sep-16-07  Zzyw: After 30. Nf5 gxf5 31. Rxf5 we get the same position as in the game. Do we have a dual solution here or does black have a satisfactory answer to 30. Nf5?
Sep-16-07  Alphastar: Well, I got the first 2 moves, after that I wanted to play Bh6 but black seems to save himself with f6, although it will be really messy.
Sep-16-07  JG27Pyth: 35. d6! Jeez. What a beautiful move.
Sep-16-07  xKinGKooLx: So close to getting 7/7. I saw 30. Nf5, gxf5 31. Rxf5, but missed 32. e5! I thought 32. Bh6. A lesson I have learnt here is, when caught between two very good moves (Nf5 and Nxh5), see if the more forcing one works first. 30. Nxh5, as <Zzyw> already mentioned, leads to the same position as in the line above. 30. Nf5 isn't as forcing, because Black can ignore it, and doesn't have to follow the above line. 30. Nf5 might still work though, but I am unsure.

Still, I am very pleased with myself for getting 6/7. Better luck next week.

Sep-16-07  nuwanda: saw the whole line rather quickly

a bit easy for a sunday

Sep-16-07  willyfly: Tal vs Spassky - material is even and both sides look great - and here's little old me trying to think like Tal - hrruuummmph - not a chance - but here goes anyway

30 Nxh5 gxh5 31 Rf5 Qe8 32 Bh6 Bxh6 33 Qxh6

or

30 Nxh5 gxh5 31 Rg3

or

30 Bf4 pushes the Black Q back to e7 or e8 with the idea Nxh5 gxh5 when the f3R can now move to g3 with the idea Bh6 Bxh6 Qxh6

or something more beautiful like Tal does - let's just go ahead and look

-----
wow! I did better than I thought. But I saw e5 happening later in the line

Sep-16-07  znprdx: 30.Rf5 g6xf5[R]

31.Nxf5 and then follow the crumbs home
to victory in whatever variation. The prettiest immediate threat is Be7 (if R[f]e8 Bxd6) so the Queen has to run to e8 Then Bh6! with the threat of the black Queen arriving at h6

I will not spend the morning on this one, but I admit I’d like to see how Tal brings the c2 Bishop into the fray – perhaps a quiet Bd1> xh5 ...

OH WELL Nxh5 was too easy!! but at least I got to see Tal bring the Bishop into action effectively. By the way trying to "think like a grandmaster" (Kotov) is one thing - pulling it off is another :)

Sep-16-07  zanshin: <xKinGKooLx: 30. Nf5 might still work though, but I am unsure.>

Just FYI, at 20-ply, Fritz 10 rates 30.Nf5 as best followed by 30.Nxh5.

Sep-16-07  King mega: That was simple!
Sep-16-07  pawnofdoom: Nxh5 was the obvious sac to break open black's kingside, but the continuation was the hard thing to find.

patzer2: For today's insane Sunday puzzle solution, Tal plays the decoy clearance sacrifice 30. Nxh5!! to demolish pawn cover and decisively weaken Spasky's King side castled position.

After the deflection 31. Rf5!, Tal had to calculate deeply into the position to verify that the quiet clearance move 32. e5! left Black's position hopelessly lost.

In addition to the difficult 32...dxe5 game continuation, Spassky had to see that 32...Nxe5 lost to 33. Bf6!, as pointed out by <MostlyAverageJoe> above. He also had to visualize the winning tactics after the subtle obstruction move 35. d6!

Perhaps this is a simple task for today 's super computers. However, for near average chess amateurs like myself, I suspect that OTB it is truly an insanely difficult (if not impossible) task to visualize such a complex forcing sequence.

Marmot PFL: Saw the first 4 moves and could see white had a very strong attack, but not sure I would have played it without finding a clear win. The sacrifice against the king position weakened by h7-h6-h5 is not that surprising though, and probably many good GMs besides Tal could find it.

MWYOUNG: Looking at deep position analysis, Clearly the best move is Nf5, as it is the most forcing line. The best defense for both Nf5 and Nxh5 is f6!.

So can say this position has 2 Key moves, Nf5 and Nxh5, Both seem to win.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Far be it from me to judge when someone can say he or she has solved a Sunday, since I almost never get these, but Tal being Tal, he probably saw the first eight moves, and I only saw the first two, so I give myself a zero on this puzzle, and no one who didn't see all the way to Rg5+ should claim full credit. Half credit for seeing the first four moves, maybe.

This was truly one of Tal's greatest combinations.

Sep-16-07  danielpi: Why not 32. Bh6?

I thought 32... Bxh6 (32...f6 33. Bxg7 Kxg7 34. Rf3 Rf7 (34...h4 35. Rf4 and same) 35. Rxh5 Kf8 36. Rh8+ Ke7 37. Rxe8+ and White's up too much material) 33. Qxh6 f6 34. Rf3 Rf7 35. e5 Nxe5 (35...fxe5 36. Rxf7 Qxf7 37. Rg3+ with mate to follow; 35...Rh7 36. Rg3+ Kh8 37. Qxh7+ Kxh7 38. Rh5++) 36. Rxh5 and whatever Black does, White seems to have mate. E.g. Qh8++, Rg3+, Qh7++ if the Rf7-f8.

I didn't check this with a comp, and I didn't use a board, so I'm sure I made a mistake in there somewhere. If anyone cares to show me up, I'd be curious to know where this goes wrong.

kevin86: Tal and Spassky could really play some brilliant chess vs one another. Too bad they never had a WC match although both were champions at one time.

I guess a Tal sac problem SHOULD be on a Sunday.

IMlday: Tal and Spassky had a marvelous Candidates Final at Tbilisi in 1965. At the time Spassky's win seemed like an upset.

sevenseaman: <danielpi: Why not 32. Bh6?> 32. Bh6 BxH6 33. Qxh6 f7 34. Rxh5 seem to do the trick, unless you are looking for a scrap from Spassky side. I guess you must be up to that even.

  talisman: Gallagher has white's moves as 28.Bf4,29.Bg5, 30 Rf3, 31.Raf1, 32 Nxh5!...big difference.
