I envisaged the knight sac, but I couldn't see that the whole point of kicking the queen from its perch was to introduce the light-squared bishop into the battle and to block the opposing rook off on the 6th rank. A lesson I have learnt here is, when caught between two very good moves (Nf5 and Nxh5), see if the more forcing one works first. 30. Nxh5, as <Zzyw> already mentioned, leads to the same position as in the line above. 30. Nf5 isn't as forcing, because Black can ignore it, and doesn't have to follow the above line. 30. Nf5 might still work though, but I am unsure. Still, I am very pleased with myself for getting 6/7. Better luck next week. |

The prettiest immediate threat is Be7 (if R[f]e8 Bxd6) so the Queen has to run to e8 Then Bh6! with the threat of the black Queen arriving at h6 I will not spend the morning on this one, but I admit I’d like to see how Tal brings the c2 Bishop into the fray – perhaps a quiet Bd1> xh5 ... OH WELL Nxh5 was too easy!! but at least I got to see Tal bring the Bishop into action effectively. By the way trying to "think like a grandmaster" (Kotov) is one thing - pulling it off is another :) |

 | | patzer2: For today's insane Sunday puzzle solution, Tal plays the decoy clearance sacrifice 30. Nxh5!! to demolish pawn cover and decisively weaken Spasky's King side castled position. After the deflection 31. Rf5!, Tal had to calculate deeply into the position to verify that the quiet clearance move 32. e5! left Black's position hopelessly lost. In addition to the difficult 32...dxe5 game continuation, Spassky had to see that 32...Nxe5 lost to 33. Bf6!, as pointed out by <MostlyAverageJoe> above. He also had to visualize the winning tactics after the subtle obstruction move 35. d6! Perhaps this is a simple task for today 's super computers. However, for near average chess amateurs like myself, I suspect that OTB it is truly an insanely difficult (if not impossible) task to visualize such a complex forcing sequence. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Far be it from me to judge when someone can say he or she has solved a Sunday, since I almost never get these, but Tal being Tal, he probably saw the first eight moves, and I only saw the first two, so I give myself a zero on this puzzle, and no one who didn't see all the way to Rg5+ should claim full credit. Half credit for seeing the first four moves, maybe. This was truly one of Tal's greatest combinations. |

Rf3 Rf7 35. e5 Nxe5 (35...fxe5 36. Rxf7 Qxf7 37. Rg3+ with mate to follow; 35...Rh7 36. Rg3+ Kh8 37. Qxh7+ Kxh7 38. Rh5++) 36. Rxh5 and whatever Black does, White seems to have mate. E.g. Qh8++, Rg3+, Qh7++ if the Rf7-f8. I didn't check this with a comp, and I didn't use a board, so I'm sure I made a mistake in there somewhere. If anyone cares to show me up, I'd be curious to know where this goes wrong. |
