Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-16-12  Howard: There's no way this game could have been played at the 1986 US Championship, for Tarjan's last championship was in 1984.

Not only that, the other guy has NEVER played in a U.S. championship.

He gave up professional chess in 1984 or 1985, and became a reference librarian.

So the question remains....who REALLY
played this game? On the other hand, maybe it really was played by these two players----but it sure as heck wasn't in a U.S. championship.

Phony Benoni: <Howard> It looks like we have two things wrong here.

First, the site (Berkeley) indicates this game may have been from the 1984 Championship, which was played there. Here's a crosstable from the tournament:

http://graeme.50webs.com/chesschamp...

As you point out, Khenkin did not play in this tournament. Checking Tarjan's other draws in this tournament, the database has all of them except the one against Ron W Henley, whose name is close enough to "Khenkin" that a typo wouldn't be totally unlikely.

Fortunately, we can check this, since the database also has this game from the 1984 US Championship:

Browne vs Khenkin, 1984

Checking out Browne's draws as well, the only game missing from the database is the one with Ron W Henley. That's enough proof for me.

Jun-17-12  King Death: <Howard> and <Phony Benoni> I was at part of this event, and I never saw anybody called Khenkin there. Henley was for sure. You're both right, this was played in 1984. There seems to be a mix up of some kind because the disaster K Shirazi vs J Peters, 1986 is also listed wrong and I sent in a correction a long time ago.

Phony Benoni: <King Death> Looks like the Librarian got on the case this time: all three games--including K Shirazi vs J Peters, 1984 been corrected.

Funny how it doesn't show up in the older kibitzes. I'll check back in a few days to see if it's some sort of delayed update.

Jun-18-12  vkwow: If you press "pgn download",the game which comes up is tarjan vs. khenkin, as mentioned by Phony Benoni.

Phony Benoni: <vkwow> Evidently the PGN is not corrected automatically when names in the header are changed.

Phony Benoni: OK, just delayed a bit. Now I can get some sleep.
Jun-23-12  King Death: We know that Khenkin was a chicken, he'd have finished minus in this event anyhow!
