kevin86: I missed it also;I went for the sharper queen sac:20...Qxb4 21 axb4 R(8)x d4} black has a rook and bishop for the queen, and white's position is under heavy fire.. Probably not as strong as the combination in the text that nets him a bishop.

YouRang: I found it after spending a few moments looking for a mating attack. Before too long, I found the deflection effect of capturing the knight, leading to Qxa3+ and the subsequent skewer. I figured this would be good enough. :)

  al wazir: I meant 20...Rdxd4.
Feb-21-06  jackpawn: Have a question for the group: Anyone else out there go through 'blind' periods? A month ago I would have seen this very quickly, today I really fought it. I seem to go through periods (a few weeks) where I'm basically 'blind', then I return to 'normal'. Been doing this for years. Anyone else have similar experiences?
Feb-21-06  MorphyMatt: Couldn't get this one. I kept thinking 20... Qxb4 21. axb4 Rgxd4 pinning the queen to mate on d1, overlooking the Rh1
Feb-21-06  nfazli: <jackpawn> I know what you mean .. usually my blind periods start at around thursday and lasts through sunday ..its weird

benveniste: I spent a long time looking at a queen sac at b4, but then I ended up with Rdxd4 instead of Rgxd4?!

Does it make any difference which rook you use to start the combo?

YouRang: <jackpawn> I've had days where I missed a puzzle that I know I would have gotten at other times, although I can't say it's the same 'blind period' thing you've experienced.

For me, I think it depends on how tired I am and how much time I feel like spending on it. Sometimes, I'm just not in a good "chess mood".

Feb-21-06  James Demery: Hey LMAJ how about listing your new plan for analysis and your 7 point checklist. Help us patzers out.
Feb-21-06  Jim Bartle: jackpawn: Yes, I go through blind periods. The last one was about two years ago. I'll tell you when it ends.
Feb-21-06  zhentil: <benveniste> If you don't know, why are you giving Rgxd4 a dubious mark? Since it led to a forced win in five moves, it can't be that bad, can it?
Feb-21-06  drnooo: actually after the a 3 check by queenie, white could resign, it is all so forced after that. There is virtually nothing left for him. After all, wasn't Yanofsky at one time THE best player from Israel?
Feb-21-06  drnooo: I see, it was Canada. Still he was very good and odd that white chose to drag it out.
Feb-21-06  Stonewaller2: Got it! 20. Nxc6 and if 20. ... Rxd6 21. Nxe7+, while if 20. ... bxd6 21. Qa6+ followed by 22. Rb7+, winning the . . . what's that you said . . . <Black> to play? oh. never mind.

alphee: Got this one until 24 ... Qxh1 and stopped there but it took some time to find the first move as I started looking for something with 20 ... Bxg2. Obviously checking the King on row 1 had to be the solution. Usefull exercise.
Feb-21-06  e4Newman: Nice puzzle
17...O-O-O was neat too

GoldenKnight: <jackpawn> Chess blindness is a known phenomenon.
Feb-21-06  McCool: Why didn't white resign after his R was taken, did he think he stood a chance?
Feb-21-06  jackpawn: Thanks for the feedback. Guess I'm not totally strange . . .

benveniste: <zhentil>, I'm giving my puzzle solving abilities a dubious mark, not the played move itself!
Feb-21-06  chessnme: I saw 20....Qc5 which I thought allowed for a winning exchange - (but it doesn't) winning the knight...and chasing the queen....but blacks attack on the a3 pawn was brilliant...I learned something new with this attack method.

Nice combination of check x pawn, check x pawn, check x pawn, check now yawn, game over.

Any known cure?

Feb-22-06  LIFE Master AJ: < <jackmd> "Once I saw the check on A3 I KNEW that was the solution. I figured this out in about 3 seconds. ( I always hate it when people say that concerning the puzzles but when you find the solution so fast you ARE very proud of yourself.)" >
