plang: &..Nc6 is an active defense to the Catalan. 14 e4 would have been premature due to 14..Nc3 15 Qc2..Qxd4 16 Be3..Qd3 17 Qxd3..cxd 18 Bxb6..cxb and Black will regain material with interest but Valimirov's 14 Qc2?! was an inaccuracy; Vaganian recommended 14 Qa5. Vaganian's 22..Nxe3 unexpectedly exchanged White's weak bishop and gave up his own passed pawn in exchange for a position where his pieces were much more active.
