| Oct-10-04 | | mjk: 11.? White to move and win. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Puzzle? |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | blacksburg: yay i got it! this was a little easy for thursday. |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | MrMojo: You don't need to work thru the whole line to see that 11.Bf6
puts Black in a bind--I'd have played that in a heartbeat. White threatens mate on g7 after the exchange of the defending Nf5. In the game Black defended as well as he could, while White's attack proceeded naturally (exchange first defender, infiltrate with the Q, attack second defender, etc.) |

 | | dzechiel: White to move (11?). Material even. "Medium."
After considering this position for a few minutes, it appears to me that white can sort of "muscle" his way in starting with 11 Bf6
The threat being 12 Bxf5 and black cannot recapture because of the impending mate. So, what can black do to throw up a defence? I see two moves, and neither seems to work: - 11...g6
- 11...Nce7
After
11...g6 12 Bxf5 exf5 13 Qg5
and there's no good way to stop 14 Qh6 and 15 Qg7#.
Perhaps black should try the other move
11...Nce7 12 Bxf5 Nxf5 13 Nh4
Trying to remove the defender.
13...g6 14 Nxf5 exf5 15 Qg5 cxd4
What else?
16 Qh6 Qc3+ 17 Kd1 Qxa1+ 18 Ke2
and black has run out of checks. I sure hope this is right. Time to check and see how this played out.
=====
Close, but I never considered 13...Nd8. I like to think I would have found the correct reply, but we will never know. |

 | | al wazir: It's easy if black makes it easy. What happens after 11...Nce7 ? If 12. Bxf5, then 12...Nxf5. If 12. Qh5, then 12...g6. |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | Oregon104: This one wasn't too bad at all. |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | whitebeach: 11. Bf6 is obvious, but in fact black has gotten himself into such bad shape, and so quickly, that white could play any of several other moves, or maybe even "pass" for a move, and still have a superior game. Man. Disaster. |

Jan-29-09
 | | MostlyAverageJoe: The correct defense for the black is:
11. Bf6 Nce7 12. Bxf5 Ng6! 13. Bxg6 fxg6
click for larger viewWhite retrieves the bishop and ends up a piece ahead. And yes, I missed that defense. |

 | | sleepyirv: Well, if any game screaming for an attack on the castled king. The French defense can lead to cramped positions, don't let White take over the kingside! For the puzzle, I got the first couple moves, though it appears Black had better, if not much better. |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | zooter: I easily got 11.Bf6 g6 12.Bxf5 gxf5 13.Qg5. Though i missed the (almost good) defence 13...Nd8 14.Qh6 Ne6 when 15.Ng5 ends black... Not sure If I should have seen all the way to the end...! |

| Jan-29-09 | | costachess: 11. ... Nce7
12. Bxg7 Nxg7
13. Bh7+ Kh7 (kh8 14.Qh3)
14. Qh4+ Kg8
15. Ng5
white is very good!!! |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | costachess: So, the correct answer to 11. ... Nce7 is 12. Bxg7! |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | costachess: or
11. ... Nce7
12 Bxg7 Ng6
13 Bf6 |

 | | dzechiel: <costachess: 11. ... Nce7 12. Bxg7 Nxg7 13. Bh7+ Kh7 (kh8 14.Qh3) 14. Qh4+ Kg8 15. Ng5 white is very good!!!> I considered this line, but it looked to my like black could ride it out. After 15...Rd8 16 Qh7+ Kf8 17 Qh8+ Ng8 18 Nh7+ Ke7 19 Qxg7 cxd4 I didn't see the win for white. |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | vikinx: Incredibly easy puzzle. I think I've said that same phrase some time in the fall. |

 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <dzechiel: <costachess: 11. ... Nce7 12. Bxg7 Nxg7 13. Bh7+ Kh7 (kh8 14.Qh3) 14. Qh4+ Kg8 15. Ng5 white is very good!!!>
I considered this line, but it looked to my like black could ride it out.> 100% correct. After either 15...Rd8 or 15...Re8 black is ahead. |

after 15 ... Rd8 ,
16 Qh7+ Kf8
17 Qh8+ Ng8
18 Nh7+ Ke7
19 Qxg7 |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | costachess: white treats Ng5 |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | costachess: if 19 ... cxd4 so 20. 0-0 |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | mkrk17: Hmm..too easy for a thursday. But i am surprised to see that black actually played 15..cxd4 instead of resigning. Reminds me of my blitz games in playchess where you go on playing (even if material down) hoping that the opponent will make a blunder. And in blitz, the opponent usually obliges by making a huge blunder. |

 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <costachess: if 19 ... cxd4 so 20. 0-0> Yeah, so 20...Qxc3 and white has nothing, nada, zip, bubkes. click for larger view |

| Jan-29-09 | | costachess: 20 ... Qc3
21 Ng5 Rf8
22 h4 |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | costachess: if 22 ... Qxc2
then 23 h5 treating Rc1 |
 |
Jan-29-09
 | | MostlyAverageJoe: 23.h5 Qf5
click for larger viewplanning to play b6 and Bb7 or maybe Bd7, depending on what white does. |
 |
| Jan-29-09 | | Dr. J: <dzechiel: 11 Bf611...Nce7 12 Bxf5 Nxf5 13 Nh4 g6 14 Nxf5 exf5 15 Qg5 cxd4 16 <<Qh6>> Qc3+ 17 Kd1 Qxa1+ 18 Ke2 and black has run out of checks. I sure hope this is right.> Somewhat simpler(/safer?) is 16 0-0 avoiding all checks, since Qh6 can wait a move. But it's mate either way. |
