 | | Phony Benoni: I refuse to comment on the pun, as I will be showing my age. As for the game, of course 27.Qg4+ is the sharpest way to win: 27...Kh8 (27...Kf8 28.Bxh6#) 28.Bxh6 Rg8 29.Bg7+ Rxg7 30.Qxg7#. After 27.Bxh6, Black might have defensive chances with ...Ne5-g6. The opening starts as an Alekhine, but ends up as a kind of Closed Sicilian. Black's treatment shows why he took up the Alekhine. |

 | | al wazir: Doda got too zbig for his zbritches (as Kissinger once said of Brzezinski). |
|
Sep-02-10 | | rilkefan: Is 16...Nb5 too slow? Maybe ...d5 instead, or ...e6 first? |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: I do believe that this is one of the finest puns in ChessGames history. Incidentally, this opening should be reclassified as a 6.f4 Closed Sicilian. |

Sep-02-10 | | Once: And now I'm going to be humming it all day ... plenty of sunshine comin' my way ... The game itself, I'm afraid, is a bit of a hack. Fritzie finds fault on both sides. And, spoilsport that he is, he says that the 20. Nh5-f6 tactic doesn't work - it leads to a black advantage of -2.26 with best play. |

Sep-02-10 | | patzam: love the pun |

Sep-02-10 | | David2009: <Once: [snip] Fritzie finds fault on both sides. And, spoilsport that he is, he says that the 20. Nh5-f6 tactic doesn't work - it leads to a black advantage of -2.26 with best play.> Black correctly accepted the sacrifice, but went wrong in the diagram below by offered the piece back immediately for a counter-attack with 21...Ne5. White did not need to take the Bg7, and just pressed on with his own attack. Black to play at move 21 (White has just played 21 f6):

Black is a N ahead with a solid defensive position. In this line 24 Ng4 seems to be an unfortunate necessity: White cannot allow Qxf6. Crafty link to the position at move 21

(White plays f6 as first move). Enjoy exploring alternatives! As the game went, Black's last chance to survice was probably at move 25 where Crafty defends wiith 25...Ng6 rather than 25...Nxd3

Sep-02-10 | | felixd: I'm probably too young to understand the pun... Can already explain? =) |
|
Sep-02-10 | | gars: at 63 I am too old to understand the pun, so would you please explain it to me? |
|
Sep-02-10 | | Jim Bartle: Actually I think it's from the 50s, from "Song of the South": Zippety Doodah, Zippety A. |
|
Sep-02-10 | | TheTamale: My goodness, they are REALLY reaching with this pun. Nonetheless, it is brilliant. |
|
Sep-02-10 | | lost in space: what a punk pun |
|
Sep-02-10 | | kevin86: The difference:white is attacking the king,what are the black calvary after? |

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay,
My, oh, my, what a wonderful day.
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way,
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay!
Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder,
It's the truth, it's "actch'll"
Everything is "satisfactch'll."
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay,
Wonderful feeling, wonderful day!
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay,
My, oh, my, what a wonderful day.
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way,
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay!
Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder,
It's the truth, it's "actch'll"
Everything is "satisfactch'll."
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay,
Wonderful feeling, feeling this way!
Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder,
It's the truth, it's "actch'll"
Everything is "satisfactch'll."
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay,
Wonderful feeling, wonderful day!

Sep-02-10 | | bakit: Black can do a better defense with this opening. :-) |
|
Sep-02-10 | | pers0n: black could do better, but some nice tricks from white. |
|
Sep-02-10 | | Blaise99a: Looking over the game with a program (of course), my feel is is that it might have been an interesting game had (!) black the courage to take white up on his sacrifice and stick to his guns !! (instead of throwing everything away with Ne5- why? and then moving the Bf8 anyway......if he wanted to save the Bishop, why not just do it? Had he done this it would have been an interesting debate...... This is the best line I get with the program- and it is interesting and totally = (I think.) 21... Bf8 22. gxh5 Kh8 23. Qd2 e5 24. Rg1 Qd8 25. Rbf1 Ne6 26. Ng4 Nf4 27. Bxf4 exf4 28. Qxf4 Bxg4 29. Bf3 ! and it is = Anyone with better thoughts or a better program? I would be interested to hear.... |
|
Sep-02-10 | | Blaise99a: In the last line with 23)......e5 white can equalize but I am seeing now, with 23).....Qd8 directly, pinning the f6 pawn, black has a comfortable hold. |
|
Sep-02-10 | | rapidcitychess: I got it. Haha!! A pun that I actually got!
