8 Qd5!

The 8th move of White seems to me a mistake...

Nov-05-10  transpo: After 6...e5?!, f7 cannot be shielded by e6 from thematic attacks by White against f7. Also the prophylactic move 6...a6 is critical to keep White's Knight from landing with devastating effect on b5.

<gambitfan> You are correct 8.b4? is a cheap trick to get Black's Knight at c6 to capture the pawn at b4 (8...Nb4?) so that White can play 9.Qb3! and simultaneously attack the undefended Black Knight at b4 and the Black pawn at f7. 8...Qd5 is one of 3 effective defensive plans against 8.b4? One of the other plans begins with 8...a6. But, 6...e5?! creates pawn structure problems for Black that with correct play by White cannot be remedied. For detailed analysis please see the following free clickable of a book, "How to Defeat the Smith-Morra Gambit: 6...a6", by IM Timothy Taylor, Chess Ent., 1993:

May-14-12  pskogli: 8. b4 is a weak move, there is no need for panic for white in this position.

White should continue with development and finding good squares for his pieces.

The d6 and e5 pawn formation will give black some worries for a while.
