refutor: any opinions on the drawbacks of the immediate ...b5 in 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 5.Nc3 b5? i guess with b5 he sets up his pawn structure, while with other moves like ...Qc7 and ...Nc6, etc. he doesn't "show his hand" so to speak?
Feb-29-04  foodfight: I have been following the 5..b5 line closely for the past few years. It used to be considered unsound, but now it has a small following with good results for Black. Some call it Neo-Paulsen some call it the Kveinys variation. After 5..b5, you usually see 6. Bd3 Qb6 then 7. Nb3, Be3, or Nf3.
Feb-29-04  Benjamin Lau: 5...b5 6. Bd3 Qb6! as foodfight pointed out was a new move discovered in modern times that revitalized this line, but apparently not enough for it to appear as frequently as the Najdorf.
Feb-29-04  foodfight: I submitted Shirov-Svidler as an example of a modern version of 5..b5. Let's see if it posted on the site.
