Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-03-06   AlexandraThess: What is the idea behind 18.Nb3? I can not understand this move.
Oct-03-06   mojoXX: Perhaps to put pressure on c5, and prevent the advance of d-d5 (after the loss of c4 and exchange of Qs), which would open the e-file. Additionally, to give more mobility to the B at c1?
Oct-03-06   skiskichess5: I recall a story about the English player, the late William Winter. During WW2 he was captured and imprisoned in a German prisoner of war camp. The commandant of the camp was an enthusiastic chess player and learnt of Winter's ability. He invited Winter to play him regularly. This was great for Winter as it meant he had a nice break from the discomfort of the camp in the commandants office, maybe food, tea etc. The problem was he had to loose without playing obviously stupid moves so that the commandant could believe that had had genuinely beaten this strong player. Winter remarked that these were the most difficult and demanding games of his entire chess career. Perhaps there is a parallel here.
Oct-03-06   mojoXX: <shishichess5> Yes, either that or an outright blunder. The sac of c4 and allowing the exchange of Q's is better for black. Even though c4 is doubled, it controls d5, so the move simply weakens white's center as well as dropping a pawn. Nice story.
Oct-03-06   mojoXX: Hmmm...I didn't realize that Crisan had such a bad reputation.
Oct-04-06   Jack Sprat: <AlexandraThess<What is the idea behind 18.Nb3?>> Hmmm...It could be that White decided to sac the pawn because Black is a stronger player and he wanted to get the Qs off the board and then perhaps he could find some way to draw. Also, at move 17, Black has complete minor piece superiority over White. After the sac, White's minor pieces don't look as bad anymore.
May-25-07   ChesterTheJester: The move 33. Rd1?? Is testimony to Crisan's ability as a player... forced mate in 2 shouldn't be hard for a super-GM to spot.

Gregor Samsa Mendel: Black is threatening 33...Bxb3 34 axb3 Rh1+, winning the rook. I don't see anything here for white that doesn't lose material--maybe Crisan didn't want to prolong the suffering.

Nah, he just didn't see the mate in 2.

virginmind: unfortunately i have to admit our compatriot was subject to criminal proceedings, due to, among others, faulty conduct which had as a result the artificially increase in his rating. he served his period in prison, thrown out of his position he was occupying in the romanian chess federation and got his rating sharply decreased (or deleted, i dont know).

so he was not at all actually of the strength of 2635 elo, he was something around 2400, maybe 2500.

sometimes the truth is awful.

virginmind: more about this (also some news for me too, finding he may not even be of 2400 elo strength) in his page on cg - which i think cg should delete it, because he is not worthy of it.
