Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-24-04   Lawrence: WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE--GM Victor Moskalenko's wife received a good slap across the face (she wasn't even playing chess) but she managed to break GM Arthur Kogan's glasses in return amid bitter accusations of selling games, drug use, insanity, and death threats. It all happened at the Salou (Spain) tournament last December and the bitterness still continues. If you can read Spanish it's all here, folks http://www.ajedreznd.com/2004/SANGE...

The letters start off gently and slowly turn into a blood bath.

Jul-24-04   samvega: now that's what I call annotating a game.
Jul-25-04   Lawrence: Play it, Sam.

meloncio: <Lawrence> I'm amazed about the things they tell in the link; it reminds me some trash TV shows.
Jul-25-04   Lawrence: <meloncio>, that's EXACTLY what I thought, a trash TV show! You just can't believe that one GM is going to threaten to kill another's daughter, for example.

After winning Salou, Moskalenko's performance has gone down and people think he's under a lot of psychological pressure.

meloncio: And what about the joke, playing with Spanish words, about his name in the beginning of the link: "Moska ... tocapelotas". If not so serious thing, would be very funny.

JohnBoy: I don't get this. 20.Bd2 and black resigns?? I don't read spanish, so please fill me in. What is going on here and why can't black just snatch the e pawn?
Dec-19-04   Lawrence: <JohnBoy>, you're quite right, 20.....Nfxe4 and Black is up a pawn. Carlos García must have lost on time.

JohnBoy: <Lawrence> - I doubt that this is a time loss. Move 20 ??? There is stuff going on around this game that creates a bigger story. Can you sketch out the history here? You give the link and indicate that there is more than meets the eye.
Dec-20-04   Lawrence: <JohnBoy>, my first posting didn't refer to this game (hence <samvega>'s ironical "now that's what I call annotating a game.")

JohnBoy: <Lawrence> - I read the <samvega> posting as amazement at the (to me unaccessible) letters at your link. My bad. Nonetheless, can you fill me in a bit? I get the impression that Moskalenko is a pretty shady character and my appetite for scandal has been stoked.

If this is too much of a bother, or you just don't want to let me in on the story, cool. I'll manage to live! ;-)

Dec-20-04   Lawrence: <JohnBoy>, I met Moskalenko at the beginning of Oct. and he didn't seem shady at all (though he wore shades during his outdoors simul). Viktor Moskalenko

I suspect it's all a question of petty jealousies between a group of Russian and Ukrainian players who are fighting for their daily bread here in Spain.
