  fredthebear: This one is a counting issue - Attackers vs Defenders, an incredibly important tactic taken for granted in many publications. Chess coaches would do well to include many of these types of positions.

White has three attackers aimed at Black's d5 pawn, only twice defended. Therefore, White begins the sequence of exchanges to win the pawn. Black's final move inserts an intermezzo check that also defends the d5 pawn. Essentially, White has given away his bishop for the pawn instead of coming out a pawn ahead.
