That could be precisely the reason why Black is in such a horrible position - so little space for so many pieces. Maybe Black should have exchanged the king's knight early on with 5. ..Nxg5 6. hxg5 to avoid having to spend so many moves on protecting it, even at the cost of activating the white R.

The way this was played, Black just stood and watched as White gained more and more territory and massed his heavy pieces on the e file (which Black had actually opened!). In the final position, White has 5 pieces on 3rd and higher ranks, Black just one. White has 2 pieces beyond the 4th rank, Black none.
