Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-31-10  eightbyeight: White should have played 46. Re2, prolonging the struggle.
Sep-01-10  transpo: After 8...Nf6, instead of 9.Rd1!? 9.e5 would have initiated an attack against Black's position where he has failed to play ...a6 prior to playing ...Nf6. Consequently White has access to the square b5 and can wreak havoc on Black.

In the Smith-Morra Gambit Accepted variations move order is critical. When White played 6.Bc4 Black played 6...e6?!, much better is 6...a6 in order to deny White access to the very important square b5. After 6.Bc4, 6...e6!?, much better is 6...a6 because of tactics on f7. The White N cannot go to b5 because of the pawn on a6. Also Black should never move ...Nf6 prior to ...a6 because of e5 by White. Once again the Black pawn on a6 prevents the standard tactical shots by White. Also, 6...e6!? blocks the c8-h3 diagonal that the Black Bishop at c8 needs to go to g4 when White plays Qe2. Note that after Qe2, White's usual counter to ...Bg4, Qb3 attacking b7 and f7 simultaneously, is NOT possible.
