plang: 14..Nc4 had been played in a recent correspondence game. In that game Black had played 17..Bg5 which seems preferable to Grischuk's choice of 17..Bf6. White missed the opportunity to play 18 Bxb7..Rxe3 19 Bxa8..Qxa8 20 Rac1..Re8 21 Nf3..Bh3 22 Rd6 with a solid edge. Perhaps 21..Be6 would have been an improvement. After Grischuk's 42..g5? 44 Nd6 would have been immediately decisive: 44..Rf1 (44..Rd6 45 Rd4) 45 Nf7+..Kc7 46 Nxh6. Black could have maintained good drawing chances with 56..Kd6; instead after 56..Kd8? his position deteriorated rapidly. The alternative 63..Bc8 64 Nb7+..Bxb7 65 axb..Rc1+ 66 Kb6..Rb1+ 67 Ka7..Ra1+ 68 Kb8 followed by Rh3 would also have been winning for White.
