Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-14-04   Benjamin Lau: 5. Na4!? is an interesting development in the exchange Grunfeld. The move looks very odd at first, but it makes sense later. Black's main attempt to undermine the white center with pawns in the Grunfeld is with ...c5, so it only makes sense to block that move by any prophylactic means necessary. And it turns out that Na4!? controls the c5 square. White later got to setup a nice outpost on the c5 square as a nice bonus since black's 6...Nb6 locks in the b pawn. 5...e5! however appears to be a good response in this db. Only two games- one win and one draw, but both show that black can secure good play. Here is the win: M Kubala vs Groszpeter, 2000
Apr-14-04   Benjamin Lau: 5...Nb6!?, seeking to exchange off the odd knight to play...c5, seems like an interesting counter, although black ended up misplaying it badly in Kai Rudolf Wornath vs D Roos, 2002.

5...c6 from D Labunskiy vs S Vokarev, 2001 was also interesting and apparently enough for equality after black played ...e5 a little later, which backed up by the fianchetto, was enough to make white's center crumble since it was restrained by the c pawn.

Feb-13-05   aw1988: I was royally crushed by Na4 today. I am ashamed.
