Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-26-04   Helloween: Perhaps 49...Qc1+ 50.Kh2 Qf4+ 51.g3 Qf3 would have been tougher.
Jan-26-04   catfriend: Don't forget the move Ne4 on the loose, meaning mean - g5 and d6

technical draw: Do you all know that I beat Deep Fritz 8 with this opening (with white) and obtained a performance rating of 2605? Of course you do! That's because I'm making sure nobody forgets!
Jan-26-04   Helloween: <technical draw> Yeah, I beat Deep Fritz in a 10 minute game in 28 moves about 2 months ago, in my pet QGD Exchange Variation with Bf4. I drew Crafty 19.01 with the White pieces about a week later.

In summer of 2002, I beat the now-GM Alik Gershon in a one hour game on the old Kasparovchess.com server.

Those are probably my 3 best achievements in chess so far.

technical draw: <Helloween> And impressive achievements they are. (especially your win against GM Gershon). OK, I'll keep quiet then until my next "great victory".
Jan-27-04   Helloween: Here is the game with a few of my comments if you are wondering how it went. There is a quasi Rook sacrifice(Black didn't accept).

[Event "Blitz:10'"]
[Site "MyTown"]
[Date "2003.12.01"]

[Black "Fritz 8"]

40MB Fritz8.ctg,
1.d4 Nf6
2.c4 e6
3.Nc3 d5
4.cxd5 exd5
5.Bf4

One of my favorite systems. Results show White scores excellently with this line. If Black plays Bd6, the Bishop retreats to g3, tempting the opening of the h-file.

5...Be7
6.Nf3 c6
7.Qc2 g6
8.e3 Bf5
9.Bd3 Bxd3
10.Qxd3 Nbd7
11.0-0-0

The game has been book up to this point. Typical here is 11.h3 and castling short, followed by swinging the Rook on f1 to c1. I believe my novelty is stronger, going for a relatively low-risk, quick attack. After no time coming off of it's clock so far, the computer takes 57 seconds and decides on:

11...0-0
12.Kb1

The King will be very safely tucked away here, since Black's light squared diagonal slasher has been exchanged. Notice the luft square at c2 granted to the Czar after castling long.

12...Qb6

I prefer here 12...Bb4, as does Crafty, which played it after I set the position up and gave it the same time controls as Fritz after the game(game in 10).

13.h4 Nh5
14.Bh6 Rfe8
15.g4 Nhf6
16.h5 Nxg4

I saw idea involving 16.h5 and the following method to regain the pawn after Black played 13...Nh5:

17.hxg6! fxg6!
An accurate defence, as f2 is immune.
18.Rdg1!

I was about 70% sure that my attack on g6 would be worth any immediate material gains for Black, and decided that this was my best chance against the computer.

18...Ndf6
19.Rh4 Nxh6
20.Rxg6+! Kf8

Fritz only took 17 seconds to realize it wouldn't be worth it to accept the Rook.

21.Rgxh6 Qa6

I don't know why Fritz chose this defence, although I believe by this point White already has a winning advantage.

22.Qf5 Qf1+
23.Kc2 Qxf2+
24.Kc1 Qf1+
I should have played 24.Kb3. It would have been faster and more to the point.

25.Nd1 Qc4+
26.Kb1 Reb8
27.Rxf6+ Ke8
28.Rf8+
1-0

A pretty finish. I looked the position over and played this after 19 seconds, intending 28...Bxf8 29.Ne5. Fritz resigned.
