Jun-27-07  AD2344: Wow!! Morphy was ridiculously good.
Jul-06-07  woodenbishop: <Poulsen:
Morphy is the most overrated player in the history of chess.>

This statement is the absolute opposite of Bobby Fischer's opinion of Morphy.

Aug-02-07  simonwilms: There isnt much to be said about Morphy's genius. He was and is simlpy the best. He was the best natural player ever, and this is exemplified by his unusually short chess career, he only competed in one tournament that i am aware of. The only person that can come close to morphy's genius would be Capa, and he would probably be, in my opinion, second only to Morphy.
Aug-26-07  Dr.Zoidberg: very nice...
Oct-21-07  srinivas6195: would you see rook takes bishop in a opening book!!!
Oct-21-07  srinivas6195: <GREEKPINCH>My first post.Morphy's book was the first chess book I picked up in the Library and I was fascinated with his flair.I do think most players were beaten against him even before the first move was made. But can we say the general standard then was not as it is now.Was Morphy made to look better then because of poor standard opponents at that time.

has he ever morphy i mean ever written any book?????

Morphy 4 mistakes:
11.Rxe6+ 0.00 (11.Nxe6 1.35)
14.Qe2 0.00 (14.Bf4 1.50)
15.Nxg7+ 0.24 (15.Bd2 0.58)
17.Nf7+ 0.00 (17.Ne4 0.93)

Schrufer 5 mistakes:
10...Bb4 1.35 (10...0-0-0 -0.33)
12...Qf7 1.40 (12...Kd7 0.00)
14...Bd6 0.58 (14...Kd7 0.00)
15...Kd7 0.91 (15...Kd8 0.24)
19...Kc8 #6 (19...Ke8 0.00)

Feb-29-08  gambitfan: A smothered mate !
Mar-08-08  JimmyVermeer: Nimh, what depth level does your analysis typically go to?

This game appears as game 236 in Sergeant's book, and Sergeant gives the name of Morphy's opponent only as S---r and doesn't give the exact date either.

On Morphy's 17th move, he actually played Nf7+. Sergeant gives Ne6+ (ambiguous, but he probably meant N5e6+) as the correct move, but Nimh gives Ne4 as the correct move. I don't always trust Sergeant's analysis. At first I was surprised Nimh doesn't give Schrufer's 18th move as a mistake, but as it turns out he can save a draw with either Be7 or Ne7.

Starf1re, you are wrong about Morphy making a forced mate in 9 here. It is actually a forced mate in 6 on Morphy's 20th move.

Schrufer could have delayed mate by 1 move by playing differently on his 20th move. The continuation was 20 Nc5+ Qf5 21 Qxf5+ Kb8 22 Nd7+ Kc8 23 Nb6+ Kb8 24 Qc8+ Rxc8 25 Nd7#

You know, there is no chessplayer who is perfect. Even Morphy has been known to miss a forced mate, as in the example of Paulsen vs. Morphy, November 8, 1857.

I'd also like to give the example of Ken Bennett vs. Jimmy Vermeer, February 27, 2008. The moves were approximately as follows (I changed the ending a bit)

1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Bc5 4 c3 Nf6 5 d4 exd4 6 cxd4 Bb4+ 7 Nc3 0-0 8 Bg5 Qe8 9 Bxf6 gxf6 10 Qd3 f5 11 e5 Qe7 12 0-0 Ba5 13 Nd5 Qd8? 14 Nf6+ Qxf6 15 exf6 Nxd4 16 Qxd4 Kh8 17 Ng5 Bd2 18 Nxf7+ Rxf7 19 Qe5 Bh6 20 Bxf7 d6 21 Qe8+ Bf8 22 Qxf8#

Whoever played black played like a damn fool in that game. Oh wait, it was me. If I can criticize my own bad playing, I can certainly criticize Morphy's.

nimh: Depth depends on a position. It has never been shallower than 16 ply in my analysis, most often it reaches 18-19 plies deep.

  Garech: Wouldn't 22. Ne5 have won black's queen?
May-08-08  Riverbeast: I don't see the win after 18..Ne7
May-14-08  Elxiddicus: <Garech> Yes, it would have, but the text move forced mate, hence it is superior.
Aug-12-08  Whitehat1963: Amazing after 19...Kc8. Just amazing!
Oct-10-08  SBC: Just for the record, according to Lawson, this game (Game 50) was played on March 31, 1859 and Morphy's opponent was F. Schrufer.

This game is also given as Game 240 by Maroczy and as Game 254 by Shibut.

Nov-25-08  Kasparov Fan01: What an incredible game from the American Genius!!
Feb-23-09  blacksburg: from move 10 on, if anyone else played this, i would say that it looks like tal. every time i see a sacrifice on e6, i think it looks like tal for some reason.
Feb-24-09  darth shitious: Schrufer never forgot this mating pattern the rest of his days i reckon

whiteshark: To Schrufer I recommend 1...a6, come hell or high water.
Mar-07-09  akapovsky: this guy was a f*%!ing genius!!
Mar-07-09  chessman95: I'm demoralized :(
Mar-08-09  MaxxLange: 8..Qa5 is required

God bless Norway!

Mar-08-09  MaxxLange: 10...Bb4?

maybe 10...0-0-0 is better

Mar-12-09  WhiteRook48: whoa! White has a hanging bishop, a lazy rook, and a triumphant knight. Everybody else was sacrificed!!
Apr-06-09  jackmandoo: This is so beautiful.
