  notyetagm: WOW! MORPHY!
Sep-06-09  blessedman01: Amazing!
Oct-12-09  kooley782: Alright, the decision is officially made.

Morphy plays 30th century chess.

Oct-13-09  ycbaywtb: that was almost unbelievable, but morphy would give anything to set up a discovered attack or pin or check apparently, also, very sweet how the Knights worked together. at least the poor black King got to do a dance around and back and forth before dying, so to speak
Feb-11-10  black.pr0jekt: wow, yeah hes the most brilliant player for sure
Feb-11-10  MaxxLange: approved!
Apr-12-10  jmay: pretty pretty nice

al wazir: After 18...Nd7 19. Ne6+ Ke8, white would have to work harder to win. A lot harder.
May-10-10  Smothered Mate: And for today's puzzle, we have me.
May-10-10  tjshann: Beautiful.
May-10-10  zooter: off course my eyes were immediately drawn to 23.Qc8+ (without even counting material) 23...Rxc8 (only move) 24.Nd7#

A nice smothered mate

dzechiel: White to move (23?). Black has a rook for a pawn. "Very Easy."

It takes only a moment to see the end of a Philidor's Mate combination. White finishes up with...

23 Qc8+ Rxc8 24 Nd7#

I wonder how white managed to lose a rook. Time to check.

Once: It's pattern recognition time. Not quite twistin' time (Chubby Checker), nor showtime (Mr Incredible), nor yet Hammer time (MC Hammer).

If you immerse yourself in chess, whether through playing, reading or kibbitzing right here on CG.com, you can't stop yourself from absorbing patterns.

It's like body language for chess. Our faces and bodies are constantly giving away clues about our real feelings. He may be acting tough, but he's really afraid. She may be saying yes, but her eyes say no. Gordon Brown may try to smile, but it will always look as if the body snatchers haven't quite mastered human expressions yet. "That one may smile and smile, and be a villain"

Today's pattern is this:

And when you see this, you cry out for a white queen on the h3-c8 diagonal. Then Qc8 is mate, or if there is a rook on the back rank, we get to play .... well, you know the rest.

Rewind a couple of moves, and the same pattern recognition cuts in a little sooner.

Here the pattern is not quite so obvious, but it is there if you look. We have the combination of advanced knight and queen on an unopposed diagonal, fighting against an uncastled king. It's like beads of sweat on a lip, or a slight downcast of the eyes.

20. Nc5+ Kb8 (forced as 20...Kd8 allows 21. Qd7#)

21. Nd7+ Kc8. The knight works its way into the heart of the white position. It may look as if we are repeating, but Morphy is making ground with every move.

22. Nb6+ Kb8 The knight reaches its impossible square with ease. Once again, Kd8 ist verboten because of Qd7#. And now we have the starting point for today's combination.

LOLOLOLOLOLLLLLLLLL!!!!!! I SMUTHERED MATED TEH J00

May-10-10  sfm: <al wazir: After 18...Nd7 19. Ne6+ Ke8, white would have to work harder to win. A lot harder.> You mean "18.-,Ne7". You are right. In fact I can't see anything more for White to keep his game alive, having oversacrificed. All White's brilliancy depended on this blunder!

LOL! Just joking. Of course that isn't true. We are talking about Morphy himself! After "18.-,Ne7" White would simply have played, ah, well, it's real easy. Don't want to spoil anyone's joy, I leave it as an exercise for the reader. (- said the old teacher and quickly changed to another subject.)
